I just came back from an 8 day stay here. This hotel is a hidden gem, and I would not hesitate in targeting this place again the next time we come to New York.

We booked this hotel through a Priceline bid of $99. Ahead of time, I had called the hotel to request a room with two beds, and they said they would note that request upon check in. Because I had to amend my flights, my brother who was traveling with me would be checking us in first, and the clerk said that would be no problem. When he got there, the desk clerk said they were able to honour our request for a two-bed room, and we found that we had been upgraded to a club-level floor. This was partially due to the length of our stay, and the fact that there were only two-bed rooms available at the time on the club level floors. That got us a free continental breakfast every morning, and snacks in the afternoon. We took advantage of the breakfast option, and had no complaints whatsoever. We could also go there at any time to use the internet connection, get a latte or coffee, or a cold non-alcoholic beverage (though you are entitled to a free beer or wine in the afternoon snack time).

The room we were provided on the 24th floor was small, but no different from any other room in Manhattan. That said, there was nothing wrong with the room. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean, and the bathroom was well appointed. The only complaints I would have are that the air conditioning wasn't the best (it was either too hot or too cold), and the shower pressure was middling at best. Those things didn't impact my positive review.

Transportation options to the hotel were excellent. There are several subway options close by. The nearest subway station was Hoyt Street (2/3 lines) that was less than a block away. A little over a block away was the R line on Lawrence Street, and a couple of blocks away were the A/C/F lines on Jay Street. The A/C/F/R lines all converge at the Jay Street-Metrotech station. If you need to take a cab from Manhattan, you come off the Manhattan Bridge, and in no time, the turnoff to the hotel shows up.

We didn't spend a whole lot of time in the local area, but I can honestly say we felt to discomfort at any time in the neighbourhood. I wouldn't call it the nicest area of Brooklyn, but the area is developing. There were lots of little restaurants all over the area, and if you were so inclined, Juniors is nearby. There is also a Macy's on Fulton Mall, as is a Duane Reade drugstore, which is Manhattan's version of a chain convenience store.

All in all, this was a great place to stay. The staff were wonderful, the rooms excellent, and we got great value all around. We'll try to be back again, that's for sure!

Proud to be Canadian!

I live about a half mile from this hotel and my parents have used it several times when visiting me. I agree that it's a nice chain hotel, but it really does not deserve a 4 star rating. There is nothing wrong with the hotel itself -- the rooms are clean and some have nice views -- but the location is not very good at all. It is tucked in a strange corner of the Fulton Street Mall area that is very gritty and not among the safer neighborhoods to walk around at night. It is only a few blocks to some interesting Brooklyn neighborhoods -- Fort Greene, Boreum Hill, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, but to get to any of these, you have to run the gauntlet of the seedy neighborhood surrounding the hotel. On the plus side, there are a large number of subway lines in the immediate vicinity, so this hotel works fine if you're planning to scuttle from your hotel to the subway to do some sightseeing during the day, just don't expect it to be convenient to stop back in during the day.

Until recently, this was a 3.5 star hotel, which seemed appropriate. I don't think the move to 4 stars is justified, especially considering that the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott, which is equivalent in terms of room & service quality but is in a better location (only a few blocks away actually -- but those blocks are pretty important), retains its 3.5 star rating. Just an FYI -- the only other hotel in this area that is more or less equivalent is called the Nu Hotel. The location of the Nu is the best of the three (it's on Smith Street just across Atlantic Ave from is one of the best dining and shopping areas in Brooklyn) but it is not on Priceline. It used to be a good deal, but has raised its prices to the $300/night range in the last year or two -- ah well...
