kgutman Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Hi We are going to NYC/NJ area Jun 23/11 - Jun 28/11,I need a room for 4 people, pref 4*. Am I better to use Hotwire or try my luck on priceline?Hotwire has a 4* for Hoboken (I think it is the "W") for $178 per night.Any advice would be appreciated before I start bidding or accepting on Hotwire.ThanksA Neebie
AaronJB Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy/1 bed. People do take the risk with a party of four and the service, but a hotel could definitely say no to more than one bed or charge an upgrade fee for a room w/2 beds. In terms of a party of four, HOTWIRE is the safer bet as they allow you to search for up to quad occupancy. Please keep us updated and let us know if you have questions about any listings.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

kgutman Posted March 9, 2011 Author Report Posted March 9, 2011 What are the amenities associated with the Hoboken property?non-smokingfitness centrepoolrestaurantbusiness centrehi speed internetI think from my limited investigation that we are looking at the "W" hotel.Just noticed it dropped from $178 to $175 per night from this afternoon. (hotwire/However I am good for any 4* in that area, Hyatt or Sheraton.key question is do I hold off for a bit or go for it on hotwire or try my luck on priceline, even though I have 4 in my party.thanks for any advice
thereuare Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 This wouldn't be the W Hotel as they don't have a pool... the above is more likely the Westin or the Hyatt. Are you 4adults or 2adults/2children?Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. kgutman Posted March 9, 2011 Author Report Posted March 9, 2011 Thanks for the update, missed that. Yes we are 2 adults and 2 teenagers. What is your thoughts on the double tree in jersey city rather than the 4 *. It seems to get good writeups and comes in quite a bit less expensive? Also what about jersey city vs brooklyn to stay??Thanks for your help
thereuare Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 Are you seeing the Doubletree available for quad occupancy with a direct purchase OR are you basing the price on previous wins... if available directly what is the price?I much favor the Jersey City Waterfront area to Brooklyn, Long Island City, etc, etc... but admittedly i'm biased since i'm local to the area. Generally speaking there are some areas of Brookyln, LIC, etc just 'feel' a bit dirty with graffiti on walls and it just having a dark feel to it... whereas the Jersey City Waterfront area (note i'm only referring to the Waterfront area of Jersey City... not the entire city) is all new and recently built up, feels safe at nite and has a bit brighter feel, imo. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. kgutman Posted March 9, 2011 Author Report Posted March 9, 2011 My Mistake, it comes up under Expedia and tripadvisor and thought I had seen it on HOTWIRE but it is not listed. Howtwire doesnt list 3* in Jersey City or Hoboken. (at least not from what I can tell). Thanks for the info on Jersey City, it is appreciated.I like HOTWIRE but keep on thinking I should try pl, but nervous as I have 4 people for 1 room. What do you think?thanks
thereuare Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 Even at Expedia i don't see the Doubletree listed for less than the HOTWIRE 4* hotel.Whether you use PRICELINE for quad occupancy is really a personal decision based upon your own temperament, the area you're visiting and how you could work around a situation where you received a room with only one bed. When my kids were younger (both under 4 years old) i wouldn't worry about the occupancy issue too much as it's often harder for hotel staff to 'deny' small children/babies, and if i did have a problem, i'd be able to make an impromptu bed on the floor, couch or chair with some extra sheets from housekeeping.... this becomes increasingly difficult as kids get older and older, as well as hotels having more of an issue with it as the 'kids' are teenagers and not just small children. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide or how we can be of further help in your decision. kgutman Posted March 9, 2011 Author Report Posted March 9, 2011 Doubletree Jersey city on Expedia is rated at 3.5* and is an Expedia inside selection, ave Expedia price is $244/nite. Question is when I used hotwire, they have no 3.5* in Jersey City or Hoboken. I would like this hotel as I assume thru hw it would be less expensive than a jersey city 4*. Question is how do you get to hw 3.5* in jersey city? PL, we are 2 adults and 2 teenagers and therefore dont really want to chance it (no beds) but I know pl has great rates. Thanks
dahammer Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Question is how do you get to hw 3.5* in jersey city?if you didn't see a 3.5* shown in your search then there are no 3.5* hotels that want to sell its excess rooms on HOTWIRE for your specific dates.
kgutman Posted March 10, 2011 Author Report Posted March 10, 2011 Thanks, maybe I will wait a bit longer and report back
thereuare Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 For similar money, you could also swap star rating for location, and get what i believe to be the Holiday Inn 57th St directly in Manhattan. While not as nice as the 4* Jersey City hotels, it does give the benefit of being directly in Manhattan. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. kgutman Posted March 10, 2011 Author Report Posted March 10, 2011 That is an idea, stayed there 4 years ago in Febuary for work, wasn't bad and we walked quite a bit. Any idea of parking in the area, we will have a car. I might start looking at hw and prices in manhatten, but I believe you get more for less in nj, larger rooms, but yu have to take transit to get into the city, so you have a time issue. Alwasys tradeoffs in lifeAlso was just on hotwire thru this site, saw jersey city 4* for 178/nite, whcih it has been and then change for a split second to $158/ night andI couldnt pull the trigger and then back to $178Any idea on HW why a 3 star in Brooklyn is more than a 4* in Brooklyn for June 24 - 28 2011?thanks
thereuare Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Any idea on HW why a 3 star in Brooklyn is more than a 4* in Brooklyn for June 24 - 28 2011?Not uncommon at all to see this situation from time to time and could be for a variety of reasons... hotels set rates based upon their own occupancy levels... a 3* hotel could have a large conference, wedding, etc. during this date range and only a few rooms left and therefore increase their prices whereas a 4* hotel may not have any events taking place and therefore has low occupancy levels and lowers their rates to attract customers. This is just one explanation of a multitude of possibilities. As far as parking, you should be able to get parking separate from your hotel for ~$25-$30/day or better. Likewise, depending where you're coming in from, you could find a Park N Ride to leave you car at during the duration of your stay and then take the train/bus into Manhattan. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board.
