like2cruise Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Hi! I am looking for advice :) We are wanting to take our daughter for a little weekend getaway for her 19th birthday. Our free plane tickets seem to work for the West Coast only (nothing flying through Chicago due to capacity controlled) so we are leaning toward San Diego...unless someone has a better suggestion. It is one of the few places my hubby has not been and so we are not familiar with the area at all. We are hoping to stay in an area where we can walk a lot to shops and restaurants and use taxis as needed to get to the main areas like the zoo or trolley. I see a 4 star on Hotwire for $105.00 in the Downtown Harbor Area which I think is the Sheraton Hotel and Marina. But I have read on this site that isn't a great location for tourist as nothing is nearby. Old Town shows no availability. The Sea World area has a 3 1/2 star for $129.00 which I think is the Hyatt Islandia. We typically like Hyatt's very much. Is this a better area as far as closer to the trolley, zoo, shopping and restaurants? There is also a 3 1/2 star in Mission Valley, hotel circle for $121.00 that I have not identified as of yet. Amenities include Restaurant, Pool, FC, BC, Spa, golf nearby & laundry. Is that a better area? We are also willing to bid on Priceline if you think that may be better...any advice appreciated.
bbbb Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 The downtown area is great for walking to shops, restaurants and Seaport Village but the Sheraton is not close to anything but the airport. I stay at Hyatts most of the time but have not stayed at the Islandia and from the reviews,I don't think it would be a first choice if it were me. What are the dates of your stay?Have you tried your search on Hotwire using two adults and two children? Sometimes when searching for 4 people the Sheraton Suites downtown will come up and I have heard good things about this hotel.
like2cruise Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 May 27-30 is our dates...so it maybe a bad weekend for getting hotels! I will see if I can find the Sheraton Suites...thanks for your input. Any additional advice is appreciated!
like2cruise Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 I am so glad I came across this board...you have helped me soooo much. Ok if I put in 2 adults and 2 children (even though there is only 3 of us) a suite hotel comes up that matched the Sheraton Suite amenities. It is $143.00 which is obviously more than we usually pay, but if the location is that great and the hotel you think is worth that much we are more than willing to pay it. It would be better than dealing with cabs and rental cars. Are there any other hotels in this area that you would consider as another option? Thanks again for your help!
Guest aldo Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 The Omni downtown is running a promo for $99 that weekend. I called and verified that it was available for all three nights (May 27-30). When you call, tell them you saw the promo offered through Southwest Airlines "Hotel Specials" (it actually came through an e-mail). This is a great rate, but you better hurry. No guarantees how long they will have it. Go to their website OmniHotels.com and sign up for their Select Guest program before you go, for extra goodies. This is a beautiful 4* hotel, brand new, close to everything. Highly recommend- good luck, and have fun!
like2cruise Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 Hi Aldo,Thanks so much for trying to help me. I got so excited and I called Omni immediately and they could not find this promotion. Did you call the hotel directly or did you use the 1-800 number? They could not find any promotion from Southwest airlines. Is there any additional information that may be helpful. I told them it was an e-mail. I look forward to hearing back from you.
like2cruise Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 Well I called the hotel directly and the 1-800 and it was the same reservationist.
TravelGuy Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I see the 4* Wyndham Emerald Plaza available off their website for $134, if that would interest you.
Guest aldo Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 The OMNI promo is "OMNIZOO-Secret San Diego Getaway"- $99 for Memorial Day weekend.Guess it's not a "secret" anymore!
like2cruise Posted April 16, 2005 Author Report Posted April 16, 2005 Thanks to everyone for your help. A huge thank you to Aldo for all your help. You really went way out of your way to help me get this $99.00 promotion. We are really happy with this hotel and price when comparing it to all the others for that weekend!
