LizzieW Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I've been lurking here and used your PRICELINE link to bid for a 4* hotel hoping for a similar deal that I've seen posted on the Algonquin recently ($130 in March/April). I started with MTW 4* at $130. Stepped through 4*:MTW, MTE $135MTW, MTE, UES $140MTW, MTE, UES, TS $145MTW, MTE, UES, TS, UWS $150MTW, MTE, UES, TS, UWS, MSG $160MTW, MTE, UES, TS, UWS, MSG, CPS $165All with no luck. Can anyone provide some suggestions? Thanks!
thereuare Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding! Are you familiar with re-bidding, as it doesn't appear you're properly utilizing your re-bid zones. If not, see re-bid and let know if you're able to identify the FIVE re-bid zones you have when bidding the 4* level in NYC. If you're still confused after reading the previous thread just post back and we'll break it down further for you.Which zone(s) are you willing to accept? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. I guess I am still confused. I read the bidding intro post and thought I understood the process. Are the rebid zones the zones that don't include the * level property you are trying to get? i.e. I want a 4* but MSG does not have any so that's a free rebid? My preference would be to stay in Midtown West, Central Park South, Midtown East, Times Square, or Upper West Side. The Algonquin deal I've seen other's won would be my ideal. Thanks again for your help.
LizzieW Posted January 13, 2011 Author Report Posted January 13, 2011 Can anyone offer any suggestions for bidding strategy? Is my price range way off for a weekend in April? Thank you!
sandb Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Are you open to ESB area? Just got Affinia Dumont 4* for $90 for end of January and see other posting for $98 at same hotel. I'm sure it's more in APril, but worth a try... and i'd start a lot lower if you've got that long to wait. Good luck.

However, can you please share your win with the board so as a NEW TOPIC so that others can benefit from the information and know about your win when searching the topic titles on the board and in the Priceline and Hotwire Calendar of Wins.Likewise, please follow-up your previous Hotiwre Los Angeles and Priceline LaGuardia Airport threads with whatever you ended up doing for each of those stays. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Can anyone offer any suggestions for bidding strategy? Is my price range way off for a weekend in April? When bidding 4* in NYC you have FIVE re-bid zones... are you able to identify all FIVE? While i dont' think you're going to score a 4* anywhere near $100 in the ESB, adding this area will help your chances somewhat, is this an acceptable zone? I don't think you're too far off... is $165 your maximum bid? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. LizzieW Posted January 14, 2011 Author Report Posted January 14, 2011 Okay, so my five re-bid zones are Upper East Side, Long Island City, MSG, Coney Island and Brooklyn since they have no 4* properties available.$165 is not my max. I'm willing to go closer to $200 but, of course, want to get the lowest price possible. Since it is so far out, I think I want to concentrate on the areas closer to Central Park - MTW and CPS. Then open it up to MTE, Times Square and ESB. I'm open to your opinion and strategy! I've been seeing that many of the traditional hotel sale dates only extend into March right now. Is it better to wait until these sale fares are valid in April or is April just that much more expensive? Thanks!I used the PRICELINE link here tonight to bid the same price range just incase with no luck.
thereuare Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Yes, you have your re-bid zones correct :)For your last round of bidding did you only bid MTW and CPS or did you also include the other zones you had bid previously? Thanks for using the PRICELINE link to begin your bidding. LizzieW Posted January 14, 2011 Author Report Posted January 14, 2011 I only bid MTW and CPS at $166 yesterday (Thursday).
thereuare Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 I'm open to your opinion and strategy! At the 4* level I wouldn't have any issue with the MTE, ESB or TS and would be looking for the least expensive 4* or better in any of these zones... not just focusing on the CPS (one of the most expensive zones at the 4* level) and MTW. However, ultimately it's your trip and you need to be happy with the zones you choose. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know if you want to continue with your current bidding for just the CPS and MTW zones or if/when you want to consider other areas? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. LizzieW Posted January 15, 2011 Author Report Posted January 15, 2011 Thank you for the advice. I'm traveling with my sister and she is very concerned about keeping the cost down so opening up the zones is probably the right strategy. Should I start lower than $165 and work up in $5 increments with my free rebid zones or start higher? Thanks!
thereuare Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 Yes, i would start lower than $165. If you're ok with MTE, MTW, CPS, TS and ESB i would bid as follows, using your FIVE re-bid zones...Select 4* MTE, TS and ESB...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* CPS and MTW...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* MTE, TS, ESB, CPS and MTW...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $158, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $163, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $165Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. LizzieW Posted January 15, 2011 Author Report Posted January 15, 2011 I completed the strategy above, only I got a little impatient at the end there and did 160, 165 and 170. Still all rejected. Feeling hopeless!!
LizzieW Posted January 15, 2011 Author Report Posted January 15, 2011 HOTWIRE has a 3.5* hotel Midtown east for $145 4/7-11. The amenities listed are Fitness, Restaurant, High Speed Internet, and Business Center. 85% positive customer reviews. This looks to me like a good match for the Doubletree Metro, Hilton Manhattan East or Roosevelt. Any way to narrow it down further? All of those properties seem nice but the Hilton is a little far east for me.
AaronJB Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 A tripadvisor rating on the detail page (when it shows one) usually does help at least a bit in terms of narrowing down possibilities. Unfortunately, in this case, a 3.5/5 is showing and all three hotels are 3.5/5.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
LizzieW Posted January 16, 2011 Author Report Posted January 16, 2011 Thanks for all of your bidding advice! After following your strategy, I ran out of bids for the day but my sister was able to pick up where I left off. $174 for the Intercontinental Barclay. :)
thereuare Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 Congratulations on your success!Glad to see you're pleased with the results and the deal you received on this property. If you didn't, please ask your sister to use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board for any future bidding.Thank you for sharing your win with the board.Enjoy your stay.
