Colfax Posted April 16, 2010 Author Report Posted April 16, 2010 After staying one night I wanted to put in a little plug for the Buckingham. It's not a hotel that's reported here often and I think it will appeal to some users.Location is very central---corner of W 57th and 6th Avenue, across the street from Carnegie Hall and Russian Tea Room. Two blocks to Central Park, one block to subway. The 16-story Buckingham feels like an apartment building more than a hotel. There's no restaurant or bar, which probably accounts for the 3* rating. They do have a room service continental breakfast though, for $9.95---cheap for NYC. The rooms are like studio apartments and have modern kitchenettes (2 burner stove, minifridge, microwave, dishes and silverware, basic pots and pans). Noone comes to NYC to cook but the little fridge was useful for storing juice and leftovers.Room was generously sized (for NYC) with parquet floors. Queen sized bed, dinette table with two chairs, easy chair, full bureau with drawers, and a large walkin closet with two walls of shelves. The Buckingham caters to sort of a casual "artsy" crowd. Soft classical music and sometimes jazz in the hallways and elevators. Prints on walls mostly music or dance themed. Calendars of upcoming arts events posted in elevators. If you prefer a more sedate or apartment type environment over the busy atmosphere at some nearby mega-hotels the Buckingham is worth a look.
