I think you'll be happy here. This is very nice Residence Inn in an interesting, historic district within an easy walk of a Metro station. I've stayed here before and was very pleased. Rated #2 out of 43 Alexandria hotels on Tripadvisor.

$125 should be enough for a 4*. The only upscale DC hotel I know that could be called a “crack house”, at least in jest, is the Westin Washington, formerly Vista, where in 1990 DC's then Mayor Marion Barry was arrested for smoking crack in an FBI sting operation. As mentioned, you may have a problem with Priceline having 4 people. Unless the hotel is particularly busy, they will probably accommodate you, but there is no recourse if they wont. If you'd rather have the security of being assured of no problems with quad occupancy, use Hotwire and look for the pool and Internet icons. However, a Hotwire listing with Internet access doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be wireless. I can't recall any Priceline hotels that have come in the Downtown/White House, Convention Center/Capital Hill and Dupont Circle/Woodley Park zones that aren't Metro accessible. It looks like all the Hotwire ones that have come up in Dupont Circle/Embassy Row and White House/Capital Hill would be as well. So if you limit yourself to those areas you should have no Metro problem. Some suburban zones at certain star levels are also completely Metro friendly. If using Priceline and you must have both a pool and wireless, you might consider bidding 4* in the Arlington zone. It's the only 4* in there, just across the river from DC in a pleasant area, an easy walk to a Metro and has an indoor pool as well as wireless (for a fee). With regard to security, there is generally no cause for concern. Although it may very well be prudent to exercise some extra caution late at night in the vicinity of *some* hotels in the Downtown/White House and Convention Center Capital Hill zones.

For Binghampton you may want to consider The Grand Royale. Looks like an interesting historic hotel. They have an Internet User rate of $72 for 6/25 including continental breakfast, free use of the local Y and free cookies! Wow! :) Rated #2 on Tripadvisor.

As I mentioned, all the 3*'s that have ever come up in Crystal City have pools (and most if not all of them are outdoor). It's theoretically possible, but highly unlikely that you would get a hotel that's never been reported. But even in that event it's highly likely that any unreported hotel would have a pool IMO because in that zone just about every hotel has one, if not all. Just avoid 2.5* bidding in that zone if you don't want the Courtyard (which has a shuttle to the Metro 2/3 mile away every 15 minutes that would take 2-3 minutes to get there). The problem with bidding 2.5* in Convention Center/Capital Hill is that you very well might get upgraded to a 3* that doesn't have a pool. If you were willing to pay $108 for the Hotwire 3* in Crystal City, you may very well be able to get a 4* for about $110 in DC. Your safest 4* bet for getting a pool in town would be Dupont Circle/Woodley Park. There are only two 4*'s that have come up in this zone, the Omni and the Westin Embassy Row. The Omni comes up most of the time and has a terrific outdoor pool. The Westin/ER doesn't have a pool on site *but* they let you use the one at the Westin Grand. A potential problem should you get the Westin however, is that I believe the rooms with 2 beds are just twins. Another good 4* option would be in Arlington, where there is only one 4*, the Westin Arlington Gateway. It's just across the river from DC in a pleasant area, an easy wak to a Metro and has an indoor pool. Their rates for your dates are just $210, so I think you may be able to get it for around $80 or so.

Good news: All the Priceline 3* hotels that have come up in the Crystal City zone have pools. I would be very surprised if Priceline wouldn't be substantially less expensive than the Hotwire offering..

You didn't see my Omni Shoreham tips? - It's an old school convention-like hotel with a good amount of character. Frommer's has an informative review. - For your 4 year old, the pool is very nice and the National Zoo is right up the road. - The Metro is across the street. Enjoy your stay.

The Westin on 2350 M St. that you mentioned is the Westin Grand in the Georgetown/Foggy Bottom zone. I'm getting $359 for your dates for it on starwoodhotels.com when you click to book unfortunately, and not $249.

Residence Inn is showing sold out, so unfortunately that's not going to work. The rates for the other 2.5*'s are also very high - $300+. You might consider adding Arlington to your 4* bidding. There is only one 4* that comes up in that zone, the Westin Arlington Gateway and it's a good one. Arlington is right across the river from DC, and the hotel is within a very easy walk to a Metro stop. The area in the vacinity of the hotel is also pleasant. The rate showing on their website for your dates is $260, so smells to me like a good deal within your budget is quite possible on Priceline.

You would probably want to avoid bidding 3* in Arlington then, as there is one hotel in that zone at that level that isn't within walking distance of a Metro, although they do have a shuttle to it.

Probably college commencements have something to do with it: American Univresity- 5/14; Georgetown - 5/18-21; and George Washington - 5/19-21. One thing I could suggest would be to add Arlington to your bidding at 4*. There is only one 4* in that zone, the Westin Arlington Gateway, a nice new place just outside of DC right near a Metro stop with easy access into the city. The area around the hotel and in neighboring Clarenden is fairly vibrant and enjoyable it its own right. Their rates are very high for your dates - $399, but who knows, you may get lucky. If that doesn't work, you might be able get a 3* in Arlington for perhaps as low as $55. Will you have a car?
