  1. Welcome! Priceline guarantees accomodations for two adults so when bidding in NYC, you could end up in a room with one double bed and a room so small that you'll have to go outside just to change your mind. On the other hand, HOTWIRE may be a better option as you can search for the number of guests in your party. That rate works out to about $1250 USD, or about $155 per night per suite. Does your rate include taxes? How much would you want to save to make this worth your while?
  2. Welcome, please post an update to your Brooklyn thread and let us know what you did for this stay. Also, please do the same for your Neptune topic. Bringing a conclusion to topics that are started keeps the board orderly, the hotel lists updated, and helps others in need of similar accommodations. You give, you get.
  3. Could you have received the Holiday Inn in Hasbrouck Heights? What was the address of the Holiday Inn you received?
  4. Halfway through a bidding session, I realized that I had $5 bonus cash per night available. I logged off and logged back using the PRICELINE links on the board. I bid $45 at the 3* level ($50 with cash) and received a counteroffer at $67. I rejected this and rebid $47, but in turn was rejected, but not dejected. I lowered my bid to $46 and rebid at the 2* level, success! Bonus Cash: $5.00 Offer Price: $46.00 Taxes & Fees: $13.28 Total Charged: $59.28 I have stayed here in the past and it was acceptable, this is sort of Holiday Inn's version of an Extended Stay America, the hotel is unstaffed at night and you can buy a frozen version of an egg mc muffin for $3 and nuke it for free. Rooms typically feature a full kitchen and one queen bed.
  5. I always get a receipt when driving for business, but I suspect the toll booth you drove through was an exact change or an EZ Pass, which requires a transponder (similar to the Route 403 near Toronto). Neither of these unstaffed booths will provide a receipt. The way the regulations are written are a bit heavy handed; you must have exact change (coins) or a transponder in case you exit and the booth is not staffed. You Must wait 10 seconds after coins are dropped into an exact change booth before exiting. There are no bill validators at exact change booths to accept paper money. You can't even swipe a credit card. I think it's just another money grab by the Turnpike authority. If Redbox and Blockbuster machines can dispense DVD's for $1, I'm sure the turnpike authority could do the same. At least the Rt. 403 in Ontario will take a photo of your tag and send you a bill if you don't have a transponder.
  6. Just for the heck of it, I entered "Tenafly" into the search bar on PRICELINE, and there is actually a Tenafly bidding zone that is paired with a Palisades zone. If you are willing to roll the dice a bit, I believe, although I'm not 100% certain, that the Clinton Inn could be the only 3* in this bidding zone.
  7. Well, it turned out a little better than expected, the room was clean and looked recently renovated with a flat screen TV, a refrigerator and a microwave. I don't think the bathroom was renovated, but it was clean. In reading some other reviews of this property, I think the $5 was well spent. I feel that many of these negative reviews were for these economy rooms. The continental breakfast featured bagels, muffins, cereal, and a make your own waffle station. Overall, I probably overbid given recently reported wins in this area for higher rated properties, but I would not hesitate to stay here again. I would think that weekend occupancy would be lower as this area gets a lot of business Monday-Thursday due to the many corporate parks nearby. A couple of Tripadvisor reviews report a NJ Transit bus stop in front of the hotel, and report that the trip into Manhattan is 40 minutes.
  8. Made a $37 bid in the Morristown zone at the 4* level, but was rejected down to the 2* level. Rebid in the Hanover zone at $45 at the 3.5 * level, and continued bidding down to the 2* level and won the Days Inn. Offer Price: $45.00 Taxes & Fees: $14.20 Total: $59.20 An annoying clerk checked me in, she said my PRICELINE reservation was for a smoking room, I asked for a non smoking room. I was told that "all the non-smoking economy rooms" were sold out. These rooms are in an older, non renovated section of the hotel with outside entrances. I could pay an additional $5 plus tax for an upgrade to an inside entrance non smoking room, so after tax and fees, my room cost $64.95. Not much of a savings compared to a direct booking of $59; including tax, $67.85. I used my savings towards a few items off Wendy's dollar menu. Used the links on the board to make my bids.
  9. We will be happy to help when your plans are firm. What is available now may not be when you make a non refundable purchase.
  10. All is well, he reported that he would stay there again the next time in the area. The continental breakfast was a little sparse, but the price was right and the accommodations acceptable.
  11. Made this HOTWIRE purchase for a relative. They say you can pick your friends but not your relatives.....maybe we will be speaking again around the Holidays since time heals everything. Amenities: Complimentary Breakfast, Fitness Center, High-Speed Internet Access It appears that HOTWIRE's Harrisburg area now has the Harrisburg East-Grantville zone. I was shocked to see an Econo Lodge rated as 2*, I cannot imagine what is now considered 1* with the exception of the Bates Motel. I was drawn to this listing due to 80% favorable HOTWIRE reviews and a 3.5 out of 5 rating on Tripadvisor. Made this HOTWIRE purchase using the links on the board.
  12. Wow, that is a new one for me! I like the new Newark zone, but I miss the old Elizabeth zone since many of the properties in the Airport EWR zone charge for parking. The Hampton Inn is really nice and they have a shuttle to the Harrison PATH Station. If there were a way to guarantee getting this hotel, I would bid this zone. When in Harrison, check out the Spanish Pavilion across the street, the calamari appetizer and a salad and bread makes a nice dinner. Also, while in Harrison, check out Pechters Bakery for world class Rye bread, it's bread worth driving for and it freezes great.
  13. Please post a follow up to your Hotwire Milwaukee topic and let us know what you did for this stay. Then reply to this thread to put it back in the queue to be reviewed. Thanks!
  14. This article may be of help, the Turnpike Authority may waive the Administrative fee for the first offense. I would claim that you put your toll in the basket and may have driven away before it was counted. Besides, if you can't trust a Canadian, the world is surely going to hell. http://www.state.nj.us/turnpike/documents/ADVISORY_video_enforcement_advisory.pdf Good luck and please update this post with the outcome. This article claims you should wait 10 seconds before driving away, but on the Parkway, that will earn you a 5 second horn and the international salute!
  15. Well, I am partial to the sourdough bread at the Cracker Barrel. Its a secret recipe.
  16. You did very well by winning the Crowne Plaza. The NJ Transit bus stop is about a block from the hotel, I think it's the route 190. You can download a schedule from the NJ Transit web site. This bus will leave you at the Port Authority Bus Terminal and you can walk a few blocks to Times Square.
  17. I looked at several HOTWIRE listings and my curiosity got the better of me, so I had to see what $29 would get for me. It turned out better than I had expected. I was early and asked if I could check in, the clerk was very accommodating and put me in a non smoking king on the first floor. All rooms have outside entrances and I was told that they only have a few Smoking rooms and that they usually hold these back in case one is requested. The property is in between a Hooters and a Cracker Barrel, talk about polar opposites! My room was clean and the bed seemed firm, I had read some complaints about rock hard beds, maybe this was the other Travelodge. There was a pull out sofa bed as well. I forgot to mention that I had bid $24 for a 1* but was rejected. I would absolutely stay here again if I come back to Williamsburg.
  18. Made several unsuccessful PRICELINE bids at the 2.5 and 3* level @ $40; 2* @ $36. HOTWIRE had this 2* with Complimentary Breakfast, Pool(s), Business Center, Laundry, High-Speed Internet Access, Tennis Nearby Williamsburg Travelodge Historic Area 120 Bypass Road, Williamsburg, VA, 23185 There is a Travelodge Central and Travelodge Colonial Area in the Wiliamsburg zone. Used the HOTWIRE links on the board to complete my purchase.
  19. You might be able to achieve your budget in the Meadowlands Rutherford zone, but it will not be as convenient to public transportation. As always, you must be willing to accept any hotel at the minimum star rating in the zones that you choose. I have bid successfully in this zone many times, I have won the 2.5* Fairfield Inn on Patterson Plank Rd. It has all of my coveted freebies: breakfast, parking and wifi and there is a NJ Transit bus stop in front of the hotel. I have also won the 1* Extended Stay America and while this is probably my least favorite chain, I could make this work on a budget. The kitchenette is a bonus but PRICELINE rooms have a one queen bed. The hotel has no on site staffing between 11 pm and 7 am. Public transportation into the city would entail driving to the North Bergen Park and Ride, and it's best to arrive early as this lot can fill up. Another alternative would be to drive to the Secaucus Junction train station and take the train, this is a more expensive option. As with everything in life, its about compromise when working with a fixed budget. Stick to it and focus on what is possible.
  20. Welcome! A rebidding zone is one in which the highest star rating is lower than the the star rating that you are bidding. Fort Lauderdale has 11 bidding zones. In order to determine your rebid Zones, you need to check each zone individually and note the highest star rating for that zone. For example, if you are bidding at the 4* level, there are 5 rebid zones, can you name them? Also, the hotels on the bidding side of PRICELINE are different from the shop and compare side.
  21. Driving into NYC and finding parking is a bit easier on Sundays, but it can still be a hassle, the toll for the tunnel was just increased to $12. There is a NJ transit bus stop a block away from the hotel as an alternative.
