  1. I'm driving in from Baltimore, and should be arriving late Friday evening (between 10 and 12).
  2. Hmm, I see what you mean. I can increase the budget slightly, but probably not more than $50 for $250 total. Or stay outside of Manhattan for the first leg of the trip, if one of the other boroughs is significantly cheaper. If it's possible to stay in Brooklyn cheaply the first night, and then Manhattan for a higher star rating the second night, that would be my preferred option. I would like whatever area the hotels are in to be Subway accessible, if possible.
  3. My apologies, I see how that was unclear. My maximum budget for both nights is between $150-$200, for everything, ideally. However, if it is possible, I would like to divide that budget so some goes to a lower star hotel on Friday night, but the majority goes to a higher star hotel on Saturday night. So if something is $50 at a 2-star on Friday, and $130 for a 4-star on Saturday, that would be preferable. I don't mind booking the first night at a location outside of the PRICELINE bidding scheme. Thank you!
  4. Hello all! I unexpectedly have this weekend free, and would like to spend it in NYC. I'm arriving Friday night, and leaving Sunday morning or afternoon. As a broke grad student, I can't afford to spend two nights in a hotel at more than $100-140 a night. However, I can probably do one :) I'd like to check in at a cheaper, lower star place on Friday, and then switch to a more expensive hotel in a better location for Saturday night. I would like help with both these strategies, if possible, and something that would allow me to transition easily from one hotel to the other. For the first, hopefully cheaper hotel, location is probably more important than star rating, and vice versa for the second. I would like to still be in Manhattan in both cases, if possible, and also not spend more than 150 to 200 total for both nights. Any advice, particularly for bidding strategy and what to start at for the second hotel, would be very helpful. Thank you!
  5. Booked on PRICELINE using the above link, for a friend. Apparently, the Renaissance is attached to the Rogers Center (previously Skydome), as it is on Blue Jays Way. Bids: (All 4*) 1.Downtown, $35, rejected. 2. Downtown + Don Valley, $37, rejected. 3. Downtown + Don Valley + Markham, $40, rejected. 4. Downtown + Don Valley + Markham + Mississauga, $44, rejected. 5. Downtown + Don Valle + Markham + Mississauga + North York East, $46, accepted. With taxes and fees, the total was $59 US. On the priceline website, the same hotel is listed for $115. Thanks for all your information! My family now looks to me for hotel booking (because they're computer illiterate) but I always mention this place, regardless. Regards, spacy
  6. The tickets for 8:30 at the Washington Monument are to go up - plan to get there earlier, though. You can go around, and up to the building at any time, I think (we went at 10:00 pm). And yes, we were told by a guard that you must contact your congress person to be granted a White House tour.
  7. I just returned from my stay in DC with a quick review. I was concerned, initially, that the hotel would still be undergoing renovations when we arrived, since other reviews suggested as such, but they seemed to be completed. We called ahead, to request a room with two beds, if possible. Unfortunately, like many others before me apparently, the only option available when we arrived were rooms with king-sized beds. They provided a rollaway bed, which was actually pretty comfortable, but still a disappointment. Anyone traveling with a family and using priceline should be aware that the options for double beds seem to be limited. Our room was really nice, with a large bureau, flat screen tv, beautiful bed linens, and a large bathroom with separate shower and jacuzzi. However, it was a little small, and looking at the other rooms on the floor with the map provided seemed to all show similarly sized rooms. I can't be sure of the distance to the metro, since we drove almost everywhere. One afternoon, we did walk to the White House/Mall area, but I wouldn't recommend walking, particularly in the summer. There was a mini-bar, snack tray, and downstairs in-hotel restaurant, but it was a bit pricey, and we ended up either eating out, taking out from the Thai restaurant or cafe across the street, or picking up snack foods from the cvs and walgreens a block away. Valet parking was 28 dollars a day, but there were several garages for self parking in the area, for a range of prices. There was also the option of parking in a metered spot during the night, and then moving the car/taking it to downtown during the day. Have many quarters and dollar bills available, in that case. We didn't have too much interaction with the staff, but they seemed courteous, for the most part. I would likely stay here again, but not as a family - one king size bed doesn't really cut it. Hope this helps!
  8. We were searching for something close to downtown, for 7/22-7/25. Using the PRICELINE link above, and the steps recommended in earlier posts, a bid was accepted for $84/night in the Foggy Bottom -Georgetown area, at the Westin Grand Hotel. That area was the last I tried before the bid was accepted, so it is possible had I chosen that zone earlier, a better bid may have been accepted. I'm thrilled, since it is only half a mile to the White House: a star better, 15 miles closer, and 10 dollars cheaper per night than my initial search, on Hotels.com. The reviews seem to be good, and a search on Orbitz and the Westin site showed the going rate to be $235-308/night. I can't express enough appreciation for this site and the admins! Thanks once again!
