  1. I started out bidding 4* in SOMA and worked up to $135 with no success. I then switched to 4* in USE and nothing there either. I then dropped down to a 3* in SOMA and adding USE along with one or two other zones and was successful at the 135.00 level. I'm attending MacWorld 2011. Prices are up a little this year. The last two years I was able to stay at the 4* Marriot downtown for less money. It's all good!

Room Cost (avg. per room, per night) $135.00 (USD)

    Number of Rooms: 1

    Number of Nights: 4

    Room Subtotal: $540.00

    Taxes and Fees: $97.60

    Total Room Cost: $637.60

    Purchased through BetterBidding PRICELINE link

  2. 3* Oakland-Alameda, The Inn at Jack London Square, $56.00 per room plus $13.40 Tax.

    Amenities:

    Smoke Free

    Fitness Center

    Pool

    Restaurant

    Laundry

The hotel had free WIFI, but there was nothing in the room telling you that. I had to go to the front desk and ask and I was given the ID and the Password. The WIFI speed wasn't that hot though. More like 56K baud. The hotel had a Business Center of sorts that didn't have a symbol on the reservation page. The room was adequate for one night, but I really had to wonder about the carpet. It appeared that it needed to be shampooed. I started my shopping using PRICELINE, but for a 3* I was up to $60.00 and didn't find any takers at the price. I also have to wonder about the 3* rating. I've stayed at the Hilton at the Oakland Airport which was a 3* I believe. This hotel doesn't compare. The reception desk has a video camera to tell the desk clerk there is someone at the front desk. He must hang out in the back room and when he sees some one on the monitor he then comes forward.

Used the HOTWIRE link to make reservation.

  3. Hope you had a good night sleep on the sleep number bed.

How does it compare to Westin's Heavenly Bed?

Actually, I didn't sleep very well. I had a number of 60 and my wife thought 40 was good to go. She slept good and mine turned out to be too hard. :) I'll know next time to let some air out. :) I can compare the beds as this was my first and I've never stayed at a Westin. All-N-All it was a nice place to stay.

  4. Radisson Hotel Portland Airport

    Your Offer Price: $44.00

    Number of Rooms: 1

    Number of Nights: 1

    Subtotal: $44.00 :o

    Taxes and Service Fees: $12.90

    Total Charges: $56.90

    Previously rejected bid was $42.

Just checked in. Very nice hotel. We were given a room on the 2nd floor and when we got to the room it appeared it had been used. A pillow was laying on the bed, soap bar was unwrapped, bottle of water with the lid laying on the desk and the coffee pot was on the counter and not in the coffee holder.

Promptly, I went down to the front desk and explained the situation and was upgraded to the Lindbergh level on the 3rd floor. (free breakfast, extra security, etc.) The motel has an airplane theme. :) The room has a Sleep Number bed. I've always want to try one out. :)

    Free Wireless to boot.

    Total $75.95

    Web price $119.00

Originally, I bid on Priceline starting in the 2.5* MDW zone at $50.00. I added the Lincoln Park zone as it only listed 1* and 2* hotels and rebid $55.00 with no success.

The next day I bid 2* in the MDW zone starting at $45 and got a free rebid if I would raise my bid $13 to $58 plus tax. I decided to go with the Hotwire offer as I could see transportation and a restaurant as some of the amenities.

  7. I have several questions how this is going to work. I'm going to be flying into Chicago's Midway Field on the 29th of July. Arriving at 2:00 AM in the morning. Ideally, I would like to bid on Priceline and obtain a room in the MDW - Oak Lawn zone and have the hotel come and pick me up. (middle of the night) In the morning I would shuttle back to MDW and pickup a rent a car to drive to Oshkosh, WI for the EAA Airventure Airshow. OK, I have read on this board that the Oak Lawn zone is a tough zone to bid in. I could move north to another zone, but I would need to rent my car in the middle of the night for transportation which is an unknown at this point if the rental car counters would be open through the night. I plan on trying Priceline for the rental car. Can anyone shed some light based on their experience how I might accomplish this plan and what pitfalls that I might fall into. TIA

  8. Yes, I believe I came across it last October/November when I was planning a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale and researching places to stay on this board. Nice picture! My wife has known me to get out of bed to see an airplane take off/land if it catches my ear. I'm going to post another question about the up coming EAA Airventure Airshow in Oshkosk, WI at the end of July when I find the right place to do it. My thanks to you for keeping this board running. It is really a valueable resource.

  9. I'm curious about the $48.00 in taxes and fees for 4 days. That seems kind of high. I recently went to Reno, NV and rented a car from Thrifty through Southwest Airlines web site. My rental was from Friday at 2:00 PM to Monday at 10:00 AM.

    Base Rate $51.00

Tax & Fees $16.46 (Sales Tax, Motor Car Rental Tax, Surcharge, Concession Fee, and Vehicle License Fee)

    Total $67.46

I felt the base rate was reasonable and I plugged the same number into Priceline and their Taxes and Fees were twice as much so I went with the Thrifty car using the Southwest web site. As a side note, on my confirmation I was renting a Chrysler Sebring or similiar compact car. When I checked in at the Thrifty counter I was assigned a Dodge Neon. I pointed out that my confirmation was for a Sebring or similiar compact car. I was told the Neon was a compact car and what the Southwest web site said was wrong about the Sebring. Thrifty wouldn't budge from their position. The problem was with Southwest Airlines web site. I later confirmed on the Thrifty web site that the Sebring was a specialty car and not a compact car. I have yet to talk to SWA about the discrepency. I'm just throwing this out so others can learn from my experience and for discussion.

  10. Actually, I was there to observe the pilot rookie school (PRS) that was going on at Stead Airport. Every year in September is the Reno Air Races. Several classes of planes race including the Unlimiteds, AT-6's, Formula 1's, Bi-Plane, Sport plane, and now L39 Jets. My favorites are the Unlimited class. These planes are World War II vintage such as P-51 Mustangs, Bear Cats, and Hawker Sea Fury's among others. Rookie school is held for new pilots who want to race and old race pilots that haven't raced in a few years. This is an opportunity to get my fix of old warbirds that fly fast. There's nothing like the sound of a Round engine (Bear Cat) pushing 500 mph flying 100 ft above you. It makes the hair on the back of my head stand up. :)

  11. A bid of $40.00 per day was finally excepted for three days starting Friday, June 18th through Monday, June 21th. Taxes and Service Fees were $22.98. This weekend was the start of the rodeo in town. The third largest in the United States. I originally started bidding 3* in the Reno and Reno, South-Airport (RNO) zones. I bid up to about $50 with no success and started over bidding the 2* catagory. This motel was undergoing a renovation. It appeared rooms were being repainted and new carpet was being laid. A banner was flying above the entry advertising $79.00 per night. The reservation was made on May 17, 2004.

  12. I am planning a precruise night and would like some assistance in which zone would be best for a short taxi ride to the port. Reading the post by Nanatravel on the 4th of Nov. it would appear that CBD would be close to the port. I would prefer a 3* hotel. Another question would be how far is the airport to the Central Business District? Your help is appreciated.

  13. Earlier I had posted receiving the Downtown Hyatt Regency in Miami for 11/15/03. Well, Carnival decided to move embarkcation for the cruise ship Victory from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale. Evidentally, The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Ministerial Meeting and Business Forum will be held in downtown Miami in November. They expect over a 100,000 vistiors in downtown Miami which would cause serious disruption to their operation from the Port of Miami. That said, I needed to make reservations in Ft Lauderdale as I didn't want to stay in Miami the night before the cruise. I wanted a 3* in downtown FLL and added successive zones of Pompano Beach, Miramar, Hollywood, and West Ft. Lauderdale - Plantation as there were no 3* listed in those zones except Downtown FLL. It turned out that the Sheraton Suites Plantation must have been a sleeper 3* hotel in the Plantation zone. This is still a good value and instead of being close to the cruise ships for viewing is close to some shopping malls for my better half.

The Sheraton is showing $109.00 Average Daily rate per room plus tax.
