  1. I agree; I like to see positives and negatives in one review in order to take it seriously. And yes thereuare, it seems like sometimes the competition seems to slam a property too. Over the past few days, I was looking for a room in a small town in SW Utah (Springdale or Kanab basically, but I looked as far away as Jacob Lake AZ). Some of the smaller inns and B&Bs (which would theoretically have fewer reviews since overall they host fewer guests) had as many as 800+ reviews. Really?! The small motels in that area have 100 - 200 reviews, a little closer to normal, but (I thought) still somewhat high for a seasonal area. If the owners/managers spent the amount of time managing their property as they seem to spend writing fake reviews, they wouldn't have to create fake reviews. Logic is a crazy concept to some people, though. (I ended up booking a room in a B&B over the phone) e.g.: probably the most egregious example I've seen, Tripadvisor's page for Desert Pearl Inn, 866 reviews, #1 of 13 hotels in Springdale Utah (97% thumbs up!). #2 in town, Cliffrose Lodge & Gardens, 338 reviews
  2. It turns out I was very distracted this afternoon. I just now went to close my bidding window, and noticed my winning bid page says " Congratulations, we've upgraded your hotel quality level to a 3 star hotel." Therefore the star level of this property has not changed.
  3. I've been lowball bidding (through the PRICELINE link!) in this zone at 2.5 and 3 stars all week. My $42 bid for 2.5* yesterday was not accepted, so today I bid $44 and won. Hyatt Summerfield Suites San Diego-Sorrento Mesa Sorrento Mesa 10044 Pacific Mesa Boulevard San Diego, CA 92121 858-597-0500 I'm trying to find some reviews for the property; I think it may be new or recently sold/re-branded. ETA: ack, I was distracted by something shiny as I was posting and forgot the subtitle: $44 ... 8/15/11-8/16/11 ETA: it looks like this property is the old Woodfin Suites
  4. I've been bidding (through the PRICELINE link!) on this property in increments of $1 all week. From my first bid at $39 on up, I've been asked to raise my bid to $48. I declined each time and kept inching my way up. Doubletree Hotel Bakersfield 3100 Camino Del Rio Court Bakersfield, CA 93308 ETA: $55.79 after taxes + fees
  5. First off, I love Tripadvisor. I use it often. However, my complaint is when I start reading hotel reviews, and the 5 of the 8 most recent reviews I see are all glowing 5* reviews, everything was perfect, and they're all from users who have no other reviews in their history. Now, it's possible this happens to be an excellent hotel. But am I the only one who suspects the hotel's management may be trying to pad their own ratings on Tripadvisor?
  6. I've been bidding incrementally for a few days (yes, through the PRICELINE link). Yesterday my last bid was $43 and I was asked to raise to $50 to seal the deal. I declined. I came back today bidding $44, and was asked again to raise to $50. I declined, suspecting the threshold was $45. I used my one free re-bid of $45 and won the Country Inn and Suites Barstow, 2812 Lenwood Road, which was my best possible outcome. Taxes and fees of $13.29 brings my total cost to $58.29. I believe this property is new to the Priceline California list.
  7. After some research, I took an educated gamble (via the HOTWIRE link!) that this 2* property was the ABVI&S which seems decent in reviews. Note, it has a pool that was not listed in the amenities icons. Another amenity icon was indicative of this chain and made me pull the trigger. Americas Best Value Inn & Suites Sidney 2115 W. Illinois Street Sidney, NE, 69162 (308) 254-2081 Amenities: Smoke Free Rooms, Complimentary Breakfast, Fitness Center, Business Center, Laundry Facilities (self-service), High-Speed Internet Access I believe this is new to the BB Hotwire list. $63 + $14.70 in taxes/fees = $77.70. I'll send in a $15 Hotwire rebate from one of my Entertainment Books for a net cost of $62.70.
  8. We were looking for a place to crash for one night on the way from San Francisco to Yosemite, and using HOTWIRE link I booked this hotel. I believe it's new to the Hotwire list for California. Holiday Inn Express & Suites Lathrop-South Stockton 15688 South Harlan Road Lathrop, CA, 95330 (209) 373-2700 Amenities listed: Complimentary breakfast, Business center, Fitness Center, Self-service laundry facilities, Pool(s), High-speed internet access Recommended in 95% of Hotwire reviews (I swear it said 100% when I was browsing yesterday) $57 + $11.71 taxes/fees = $68.71. Will send in $20 Hotwire Entertainment Book rebate for a net cost of $48.71.
  9. Using HOTWIRE link, I bought this room for $62/night. A fellow traveller booked their room at the same time for $61/night. With taxes and fees, my total is $146.33. I'll send in the $20 rebate from the 2011 Entertainment Book for a net cost of $126.33. Amenities listed: fitness, pool, restaurant, business center, high-speed internet, golf nearby Recommended in 90% of Hotwire customer reviews Before booking, I was shown that this hotel gets 4.0 out of 5 on Tripadvisor.com. I was having trouble finding a decent property for a decent price for this stay; we wanted to be near the University. We know there are some less-than-stellar hotels in the area. Thanks to BetterBidding, I was able to avoid some problem hotels on Priceline. I ultimately couldn't find what I wanted on PL. But based on reports here, I booked on Hotwire. I'm happy with the result; thank you for providing a great service, and thanks to other travellers for reporting their wins. You've helped me out a lot today.
  10. My first bid of $39 (through the PRICELINE link! :) ) was given a counter-offer of $54. I refused, then used my free re-bid at $40, which was accepted. Total with taxes + fees is $53.56. I believe this hotel is new to the Priceline List.
  11. My first bid of $50 per night ($30 + $20 bonus cash from Groupon) for a 3* hotel was accepted. I was upgraded to this 3.5* hotel.
  12. I started bidding at $62 tonight, and used 4 (of 5 possible) free re-bids in $1 and $2 increments up to my accepted bid of $69 + $16.97 in fees. My actual bid was $29 as I was using $40 in Priceline bonus cash from a Groupon, but effectively my winning bid was $69. I believe this hotel is new to the Priceline list in McAllen.
  13. I believe this hotel is new to the BB Hotwire Hotels List. $65 + $14.87 taxes & fees = $79.87. After a $20 rebate from the 2010 Entertainment Book, my price is $59.87. I was hoping to get the Country Inn & Suites Kearney, which I'd won last year on Priceline. The CI&S may be the 2.5* hotel on Hotwire; I'm not sure. In the TripAdvisor.com reviews for the CI&S, someone mentioned they'd bought their room on Hotwire. So even though CI&S isn't on the Hotwire list here, I thought I had a chance. The Wingate Inn appears to be a nice hotel with great reviews, so I'm not disappointed. Amenities: Complimentary breakfast Fitness Center Pool(s) High-speed We are still gathering reviews for this property
  14. The asking price on my desktop PC for this hotel was $74. I switched to my laptop, where the asking price for the same hotel was $69, so I bought it. I also tried using different browsers (IE, FF and GC) and clearing cookies on the desktop, but it was always offered at $74 on the desktop. I believe this hotel is new to the BBF Hotwire Hotels List. Taxes & fees added $11.70 for a total of $80.70. I will be redeeming a $20 Hotwire rebate from the 2010 Entertainment Book on this stay, which will bring my total to $60.70. I was bidding on Priceline for a 2.5* in this area, but I could not get anything under $65 (after taxes/fees) on this date, so I went with this Hotwire hotel. The Missoula Red Lion Inn may now be 2.5*. Amenities listed: Smoke Free Rooms Airport Shuttle Complimentary Breakfast Fitness Center Pool(s) Business Center High-Speed Hotwire is still gathering reviews for this property
  15. I started my bidding at $40 and increased it by $1 per day until I won at $44 + $13 in taxes & fees = $57 for one night. Priceline denied my $43 bid, then countered with an offer to raise my bid to $58. I chose to wait 24 hours, and my next bid won.
  16. I spoke with the corporate office and the hotel's general manager, who agreed to refund the price of my stay. He said I'd have to do that through Hotwire. I contacted Hotwire with this information. They're refunding my purchase price. I still think something shady was going on, and will contact Hotwire to discuss that after I see the refund on my CC.
  17. My actual bid was $28, but I was using my Entertainment Book coupon, which added $10 per night of value to my bid. So my effective bid was $38 per night. I bid on a 3* hotel and was upgraded to this 3.5* property. I started with a bid of $35. My first free rebid was accepted at $38.
  18. Yes, this is last year's bid that I've neglected to share until now. Better late than never, right? I believe this is new to the Priceline Kearney NE list Got it for $49 on my first bid early in the afternoon on the day of check-in. We'd only decided to get a room in this town that afternoon; therefore I only had one bid, so I almost certainly overbid. Number of Rooms: 1 Number of Nights: 1 Room Subtotal: $49.00 (USD) Taxes and Fees: $14.53 (USD) Total Room Cost: $63.53 (USD) 2* on Tripadvisor 3* on Travelocity Amenities according to my Priceline confirmation:
  19. I posted my purchase and details of my stay in my hotwire hotel thread. It was not a pleasant stay and I don't recommend booking the hotel through HOTWIRE. The breakfast was ok. weak coffee, white bagels, toast, sausage patties, a pan of scrambled eggs, an assortment of muffins, juice, biscuits and gravy, dry cereal w/ milk, oatmeal packets. I had a bagel; my husband said the biscuits and gravy were bland and tasteless and the eggs runny. He's not picky.
  20. I believe this hotel tries to scam customers that book through a third party booking site, like Hotwire. The rooms they put Hotwire customers in (small, one bed, one room, no sofa) are not even mentioned on their website; if they are there, they're not described properly because the three I saw did not have a pull-out sofa. I should know; I was moved into several of their Hotwire rooms after each one failed to live up to 2 star hotel standards regarding cleanliness and maintenance. Then when the customer is not satisfied with the dirty room with broken a/c, they try to get the customer to upgrade to a better room for $20. Sounds to me like a scam that discriminates against Hotwire customers. The front desk staff sent maintenance to fix issues we had in our room (a/c). Eventually they moved us to another room. The same song and dance happened there (when I opened the little maintenance door on the a/c, I noticed that someone had even written on the a/c unit that it needed to be replaced). The bedspread also had some white stuff caked on it in several places (unfortunately I did not get photos of that). They sent maintenance up, called back and forth, and finally sent us to a third room where the a/c worked but the bed had serious issues. We got settled in our third room at 11 PM, three hours after we checked in, and the front desk staff knew we were unhappy with the bed but did nothing to fix the situation. We asked for extra pillows; it took them half an hour to send them up, and even then, they didn't send as many as requested. Their excuse was they had to grab pillows from other rooms. The bathroom was disgustingly dirty. Dirt was caked in the corners of the bathrooms (I took pics of this and may try to post them here if it's possible). I found a dead bug on my towel. I think the positive ratings I read at other websites may be for the larger, suite rooms at this hotel. I firmly believe from my discussion with the morning front desk agent that Chase saves these smaller rooms with one bed for Priceline and Hotwire customers -- rooms they apparently do not maintain or clean well because they don't have to. I suspected as much when I was continually offered to upgrade to a King suite for $20 during the 3 hour room switcheroo marathon. I didn't want to pay extra for a King suite; I just wanted what I'd paid for -- a clean, maintained room for 2 adults to sleep in for a few hours without picking up any crawling hitchhikers. The morning front desk clerk even admitted they don't normally offer these small rooms to the public; they save them for PL/Hotwire customers. She did say they do open the rooms to the public when the hotel is full, but they don't offer them at a reduced rate, which made me think the $20 upgrade for Hotwire customers for larger king suites was bogus and pretty much a scam. Don't buy into the sham here. I would strongly recommend not booking this hotel through a third party website. The same clerk said if I had booked directly with the hotel, she'd have refunded my money on the spot, but could not because I'd booked through Hotwire. For me, it wasn't worth the money I paid, even after a $15 or $20 rebate from the Entertainment Book. I'd rather go camping than stay at this hotel again. I contacted customer service at The Hardage Group with my complaints today. They supposedly will call me back.
  21. 3* DC (Rockville - Gaithersburg) Chase Suite Hotel one night, 5/22/10 - 5/23/10 Price $46 + $13.37 taxes/fees Amenities: Pool, Business Center, Laundry <-- this last one is not on the pinned Hotwire list; apparently it's one of those ephemeral icons Recommended in 80% of customer reviews I was hoping for this hotel. I was a little uncertain because the amenities weren't a perfect match, but it ended well.
  22. 2.5* Louisville (East & Jeffersontown) Jameson Inn Hotwire rate: $36 / night date of stay: 5/8/2010 taxes + fees: $11.15 total: $47.15 complimentary breakfast fitness center pool laundry recommended in 90% of customer reviews I believe this hotel is new to the Hotwire list.
  23. I'm new to Restaurant.com. Does someone want to refer me and get a $10 Restaurant.com certificate? Reply here, and I'll PM you my e-mail address to refer me.
  24. No, no counter offers on any bids. in the first post, I said I wouldn't mind staying in a surrounding area. Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe are the only acceptable zones, in that order of preference. Sorry, I should have made that clear. What criteria do you use to determine a starting bid?
  25. My bids were rejected: $26 for 2* in Mesa $28 for 2* in Mesa + Tempe $30 for 2* in Mesa + Tempe + Scottsdale I'll raise my bids in 72 hours. Thanks for all your help!
