late sept to early october

2nights

dates a little flexible

would like to stay at 5* but unlikely after my unsuccesful bid of $180. about $60 over my budget.

saw the best deal symbol so i got a little carried away. is that symbol a sales tactic or are they for real?

they have me with it.

i know rome is expensive but as per my reading of older posts iv read reports of $140 succesful bids for 5*

for november. is 1 month that much difference or do prices fluctuate that much?

iv also bid for 4* upto $130 without luck. got a $280 counter offer.

no thanks

not sure about 3* because my last stay in rome in a 3* was very average.

does priceline use good 3* because i know some are quite good.

how much should i bid? already started at $75

should i wait to closer to the date to bid or use some other websites such as last minute deals?

what area of rome is the termini station?is that also the centre?

i wouldnt mind staying there

thanks better bidding

We don't see too much biddin in this area, and what has been reported, is usually at the higher star levels; so there is only one 3* property in the Priceline Hotel List, but there are likely others.

Have you already researched your date range to see if any date range is less/more expensive than the others?

The time you are going is basically high season in Rome (although that's much of the year).

Rome seems to be one of the more expensive cities for hotels, and it's hard to get a bargain, particularly if you also want a nice area.

I'd start by taking a look at what you can book conventionally in your budget.

$75 is just not realistic -a low-level 3* hotel in Rome will probably cost at least 120 Euros for your dates if booked conventionally, even if near Termini. The exchange rate has gotten worse since that $140 bid.

Here's where I stayed - http://www.hoteljulia.it - it's a well-located 3* hotel, but it won't be cheap for your dates. You might also like to consider convents, but these book up well in advance.

just bid $90 for a 3* in rome but was rejected.

have previously looked at the convents but they mostly located in the vatican and they have curfews.

what should i expect to pay on priceline?

looked at HOTWIRE and their prices seem more expensive than rack rates.

what do you think waiting and booking with sites like ratestogo and wotif last minute.

Not all the convents are near the Vatican - several have very good city center locations. Most do have curfews, though.

You could look at Ratestogo and Wotif to see what they offer right now. That might give you an idea if there's even a possibility they will have something useful in late September - as they do seem to use many of the same hotels over and over again.

Personally I wouldn't wait until the last minute - bargains are so hard to find in Rome that any hotel you get at the last minute in high season might not be your preferred choice. Of course you could get lucky.

As to what to bid - it's really hard to say without knowing any rates.

its not for my dates because you can only book 21 days in advance.

i was only looking to see what hotels go for and what can be found.

i know prices and availabilities change but considering that price for mid june which i understand its a more expensive time to go than end of september/early october i might leave it for last minute, since a bargain can be found

hotel was prime hotel saint john

cost $124 US

full rack rate $668

I agree that Rome is one of the more expensive cities as far as hotels go. I dont recall finding higher hotel rates anywhere outside of Moscow. I was successful bidding on a priceline 3* hotel in Rome last year. It was towards the middle of September. The hotel is called the hotel Mariano. http://www.hotelmariano.com/. It was small and independent as many of the hotels in Rome are. Everyone at the hotel was extremely nice and treated us very well. The rooms were standard 3* European hotel rooms, tiny but certainly adaquate. I ended up bidding up to $130 and that bid was accepted. The location was very close to Termini station which was perfect for us, however some people feel the area is seedy. I personally felt the area was completely safe. You can catch the Da Vinci express from FCO for less than ten euros. The area is in close promixity to several restaurants, bars, etc. I would be very surprised to see a winning bid for a 3* hotel under $100. Roman hotel are just more expensive. Also if you are bidding on a 3* hotel in Rome it most likely will not be any sort of westernized chain hotel. It will be a smaller independent Italian hotel with 50 rooms. Good luck and enjoy your stay.

thankyou for your input.

might leave that $130 bid as a last resort after iv exhausted all last minute deals.

is bidding on priceline say 1/2 weeks before a little late for Rome?

Gave up on priceline for Rome.

We ended up staying in a convent as per will travels advice.

I rang around all the convents(found as list on some site)

We found one in piazza navona called fratterna Domus for 80 euros a night including breakfast.Location was great but a little tricky to find since i did no research to where it was exactly.

We got there late about 7pm and where assigned the last room which was a pain to get to since they have no lifts.

The nuns where great. helpful and caring. Always making sure we had our valuables not showing before we went out.

The dinner with wine at 13 euros was quite good value for money since it saved you the time of looking for somewhere reasonable.

Curfew was at 11pm which was enough since we were tired the first night and we strected it the second night to 1130pm. They where ok with that.

Would stay again not for comfort but for location and hospitality.
