hello, first time poster here, me and my gf are planning a trip to NYC next month for our anniversary trip, we are arriving on May 15th and leaving May 23rd, heard lot of good things about using priceline to get a good deal on hotel and wondering if you guys can help us plan

we are interested in staying in Time Square or Midtown West at the moment, budget is about max $150 incl tax, probably 3* or higher (though it seems like those are the 2 most expensive areas), we are planning to do lots of sight seeing - most likely will buy a New York City Pass

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

Unfortunately, your budget (and considering that this is a longer stay, as well) will likely not be enough for a 3.5*, but may be enough for a 3* in MTW/TS. Would you consider any of the other nearby areas - such as MSG? If you expand your zone choices, you may have a better choice of landing a hotel within your budget.

Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

3* should be ok, at the moment I havn't consider the other areas, speaking of a longer stay, is it easier or harder to get a deal because it's a long trip, would I have a higher chance of getting a better deal if I do 2 hotels with 4 days each or something?

I will use the PRICELINE link tonight to do some bidding and try my luck

Longer stays can be be a bit more difficult than shorter stays, as explained in this SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID thread.

However, seasonally this is one of the most expensive times of the year in NYC, and i think your budget is going to be tough for a 3* in either one of these two zones, regardless of how you split the bid.

If you've already tried bidding letting us know which star level, zones, and bids you've placed... or if you'd like a strategy to follow we'll provide one for the asking.

just trying my luck and did a bidding at $110 and 125 for 3* at TS/MTW/MSG, but got nothing ;/ of course I'd be a little surprise if i got it too, will try again tomorrow, I will probably do up to $150 at TS/MTW, and then if nothing, incl MSG

btw any idea what hotels I might get in MSG for 3*?

bid 3* at $145 for MTW / TS, then $160 for MTW / TW / MSG, still no luck

I think I will have to break my stay up into half, maybe sat to weds, and then thurs to sun, I noticed that on hotwire if I put 8 days straight cheapest rate is about 209 for 3*, but if i do sat to weds, then it drops to 183 (this is what I remembered but I could be off)

If you're going to try SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID, ideally you want to try to get as many nites as possible on the first purchase, since presumable the 'remaining' nites would be the more difficult (and expensive).

If you have the time, i would loop thru your bidding strategy for the following date combinations:

5/15-5/23

5/15-5/22

5/16-5/23

5/15-5/21

5/17-5/23

5/15-5/20

5/18-5/23

5/15-5/19

5/19-5/23

The above attempts to get the greatest number of days on your first purchase, rather than making an assumption that splitting the stay 50/50 is the 'right' combination.

If you'd like help with a bidding strategy let us know which zone(s) are acceptable along with your maximum bid.

Good luck and keep us updated as to your progress.

wow i'd never thought of doing that, just tried the bidding with the diff dates, for 3* in TS/MTW for $165, for all the dates except the last 2, but still no luck, I just want to stay somewhere central, so maybe I will include MSG or maybe CPS next time

one question about this way is, should I be bidding higher each time? I'm assuming no because I'm cutting my days shorter which could be easier for me to get the deal

I would be using a bidding strategy which gradually increased your bids from low to high... do that for one set of dates, if rejected, start over and repeat the same strategy/bids for the next set of dates, etc, etc.

Does that make sense? What bid(s) did you make?

The 'problem' is that the Travelocity indicates that this hotel is in Manhattan (not necessarily Midtown)... so includes almost the entire island of Manhattan from 125th St down to the tip of Battery Park.

did a bidding for $170 again for TS/MTW earlier today, it said the request was a duplicate, but then I got an email saying the bid was not accepted, not sure what happened there

but just now, I did a bid from 5/16 to 5/23 for 3.5* in TS/MTW at $180, and then... it got accepted! got the Millenium Broadway Hotel, though I'm not sure if that was a good price anymore, 180 was my absolute max because I seem to find some at that price range on hotwire and Travelocity

I guess I don't have to worry about it anymore at least, I used the PRICELINE link from you guys, thank you for helping me

(totallly shouldve bid $175 first)
