A few comments on your bidding strategy...

Lowering your star rating and raising your bid is not generally recommended, as discussed in this thread: If You Lower Your Star Rating Then Lower Your Price. Bidding as you have you risk getting a lower star rated hotel and over-paying for it.

At the 4* level you have plenty of 'true' re-bids available, which when done correctly, essentially lets you add a zone while keeping your star level the same, while ensureing that if you're successful it will be in your original zone. In your above bidding this didn't make a difference as you were ultimately upgraded to a 4* hotel on your 2* bid (i am correct that the Marriott is rated 4* by Priceline, right?). However, i think if you continue to follow this strategy of lowering your star rating and raising your bid at the same time, it will eventually come back to burn you... and using 'true re-bids' is a safe
