dunphy Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Hi there,Wanting to book a 3.4-4 star in Chicago for the dates: 04/25-04/28 on priceline in the Millenium Park, Loop and Grant Park Area for $100 a night or less. Any suggestions for bidding strategies? Thanks
AaronJB Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Do you need to be in the Loop? I ask, as this area can be very quiet at night (especially in certain parts) - if you are looking for more nightlife, I'd suggest looking over the river in the River North/NMA zone. Is your budget $100 "all-in" (w/tax & fees) or $100 + tax/fees? A $65 bid may be enough for a 4* in the River North/NMA zone for these dates. While that is a lowball guess and may not be accepted, it's probably not far off, given HOTWIRE rates for these dates. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
dunphy Posted April 5, 2010 Author Report Posted April 5, 2010 I am not really sure to be honest with you b/c I haven't been to Chicago before. More action at night might be nice though.
AaronJB Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Personally, I would recommend River North/NMA, given that rates are quite reasonable for these dates - I would recommend trying a 4* River North/NMA at $65 and see if any hotels bite at that level. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
wingy Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 I'm not a Chicago expert by any stretch, but I concur with Aaron. We started a tradition of taking the kids there on the 1st weekend of Spring Break. Last year we stayed at the Palmer House (Loop area, $70/night + tax on priceline using the link here) and as mentioned above, very quiet at night. Not a huge deal as we have 3 kids, but still, it was hard to even find an ice cream cone after about 10pm. Lots of panhandlers too. We ended up taking the bus up to NMA because thats where all the good shops and food are. This year we stayed in the NMA/River North for the same $$, similar or better property (The Drake, $65++ again thru priceline via this site link) and had everything at our doorstep. I would definitely choose NMA over the Loop, its far more entertaining, even if it meant paying more. Only minor gripe, I would prefer to be in the middle of Michigan Ave, as opposed to the far end where we stayed. But thats picking nits.
AaronJB Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 Exactly; I do recommend the Loop if prices are cheaper for particular dates or if a traveler isn't planning to do much at night (or for business travelers), but otherwise, the NMA area is nicer in that one can find things to do and a much wider selection of restaurants at night. Late at night in the Loop in some areas, it's just totally empty.
dunphy Posted May 8, 2010 Author Report Posted May 8, 2010 I decided to go with HOTWIRE for $99 and got Hotel Sax in NMA. Very unique hotel, excellent location! Thanks.
