Best place to start is a "flexible date" search using something like Travelocity. You'll get a good idea of what fares are going for.

Not a lot of people use priceline for airfares (for a lot of reasons), so there's not a lot of information to go by. After seeing what's publicly available on priceline, you can do a search on hotwire. If there's a lower price on hotwire, I'd bid $50 less on priceline and see what happens.

Personally, given the loss of frequent flyer miles and specific flight selection, I'd insist on saving at least $100 on a published fare in using a bidding service.
