That's the way it goes in NYC... almost always an additional charge for more than double occupancy, but at least you now don't have to worry about the bedding issue, which is a substantial risk in NYC.

I'll also suggest you take the short walk one morning and give Ess-A-Bagel a try for breakfast (Third Ave at 51st St)... one of the best bagels in the city and makes for a relatively inexpensive breakfast among local NYers.
