day before we had bid $65 and $68 without any luck. parking is $50 but oh well.

Please don't pay $50 for parking. Look around and you can do better.

I'm sure the Sutter/Stockton garage is better than that, and it's only about a block away, if that. Union Square garage probably isn't too bad overnight. Just look around and don't blindly do the valet parking. ($50 could probably feed a third world family for a month...)
