Won this on the first bid, which was really encouraging.

Wanted to stay in the mountainview/palo alto area, preferably in the residence inn (which is rated as a 2.5*).

Bid $45 per night on 2.5* hotels in mountainview area - got accepted in the first try, which was surprising considering that the full price rate was $199 per night for that period for the location.

my dates of stay are: 02/04/10 - 02/08/10

thank you. In general, is it usually the case that lower prices such as these would be available only a few days before booking or is that not really determinate?

There's no way to determine; while some people find a better rate by waiting until the last minute, while many others have waited until the last minute, only to find all the good deals suddenly gone. It depends on the area, date, hotel and other factors - there's no way to know. One does have to keep realistic "floors" in mind for prices, as well, due to profit margins and other factors.
