Hi there,

My husband and I will be traveling to NYC for the first time from Feb 14 - 18. We arrive Sunday at 11 p.m. at JFK and depart at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. We are looking for a 3* and above for an extremely reasonable rate. I've seen posts that I can book such a thing for around $74 a night if I pick the right area (i.e. chelsea). What areas are best to stay in if we want to see the sites? We don't mind doing a some walking or using the subway. We just want to keep things as affordable as possible without losing the essence of the city. We've used PRICELINE many times before to book hotels, but I am so unfamiliar with the NYC area.

Any recommendations would be great.

Thanks!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

It's more so the right dates (ie- dates where there is low demand) than the right zone... and the $74 win you're refering to (at the Affinia 50 iirc) is not something that you should expect. We'll certainly try to bottom fish, but it will likely take more than this for your stay... what is your maximum bid for this trip?

Personally, I'd recommend not staying in Times Square; Midtown East is a terrific choice, as it's an area that has a lot to see and do and is convenient, but doesn't feel quite as hectic as MTW and especially Times Square. The Empire State Building area, while not quite as centrally located, is also a nice option, as is Chelsea. HOTWIRE has a trio of 3.5* listings in the $130-145 range in MTE, ESB and Midtown Central, so I would guess that a 3.5* for under $120 (possibly in the $100-110 range) is possible; the only concern regarding 3.5*'s and MTE is that a couple of the options - the Tudor and Millennium UN - are a bit far East in MTE. While nice hotels, they are a bit of an extra walk.

Thank you for using the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links.

If you let us know which zone(s) you're willing to accept we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Is $120 your maximum bid price or 'all-in' price (including fees and taxes)? Are you willing to pay more for a higher rated hotel OR is your goal the least expensive 3* hotel for this stay?

Let us know the above information and we'll advise accordingly.
