ENYC2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 I will be arriving in NYC via a train from Philadelphia, therefore I would like to try to get a hotel near Penn Station. So, I would like to bid on priceline for a 3.5* hotel in the MSG area. $120 is my maximum bid price for now. I need help on what price to start at. I'm new at this. Any help is appreciated.
AaronJB Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Is your $120 limit including tax ($120 "all in" or $120 + tax)? Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase. Additionally, only 1 property has been reported to the board at the 3.5* level in this zone, so your bidding is going to be limited and the property (Affinia Manhattan) may not have PRICELINE inventory for these dates. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.
ENYC2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Author Report Posted January 16, 2010 $120 "all in".I would also be open to ESB and TS areas, in addition to MSG.I will be sure to use the PRICELINE links as you stated.
AaronJB Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 $120 "all in" would be a bid of approximately $100. That's unfortunately unlikely to be enough at the 3.5* level for the TS area, but in terms of the 3.5* level in the ESB or MSG areas, $95 may be enough to a secure a 3.5* within either zone. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.
ENYC2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Author Report Posted January 17, 2010 I bid on those three zones starting at $95, rebidding up to $115, and was unsuccessful. Contemplating whether I should increase my bid or go down to 3*.
AaronJB Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 MTE is also quite a nice area, but there are a couple of 3.5*'s in that zone - the Tudor and Millennium UN - that I think would be too far East.
ENYC2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Author Report Posted January 18, 2010 I would like to now try for a 3* in TS, MSG, and MTW zones. I would like the bid range to be from $85-$120 (pre-tax). Can someone please help me with a bid strategy?I would do MTE and ESB as well, but I'm afraid I'd get one too far east and it'd be too hard to get there from Penn Station.
AaronJB Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Board moderator thereuare is not currently here to provide more detailed bidding strategies and will be back in a couple of days. However, in terms of the 3* level, there are no re-bids for that level in NYC. Personally, I think under $100 for a 3* in TS is going to be unlikely, but may be possible in MTW or, more likely, MSG. I'd bid 3* Madison Square Garden for $90, if that doesn't work, you could try 3* Madison Square Garden+Midtown West for $95, then if that doesn't work try 3* Midtown West/Madison Square Garden and Times Square for $100.Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.
ENYC2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Author Report Posted January 19, 2010 Thanks for the suggestion. Still no luck, though. After I bid your suggestion, I ended up adding CPS, and went up to $115 at 3* but still nothing. Will keep trying.
AaronJB Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 Sorry to hear that the bidding didn't go as hoped. I did find a special sale on the new Ace Hotel via Quikbook for $99; that would be not far from Penn Station. Let us know if that idea is of interest.
ENYC2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Author Report Posted January 20, 2010 Ok, finally I got one. My $140 bid was accepted. It's the Hudson, a 3.5* in CPS. Looks like great access to Columbus Circle subway stop that we can arrive at from Penn Station. It's a little more than I wanted to spend, but I'm happy with it.
yellowdog Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 ENYC2010Thank you for sharing your result with the board!Enjoy your stay. Please use the site's HOTWIRE and PRICELINE links to start future purchases.Yellowdog.
AaronJB Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 Quite a good deal for this unique boutique property, which is in a great location. Expedia has the hotel on sale for $237 for these dates, with a regular rate of $279.
ENYC2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Author Report Posted January 21, 2010 I called the Hudson about bed size, and they said it's 1 double bed. I asked if I could have 2 doubles or a queen, and their response was that I couldn't change that myself since I didn't make the reservation directly through them. I understand that the rooms are notoriously small, so maybe that has something to do with it. It's just my sister and I, so I'm sure we can make it work, but I'd rather have a larger bed. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I stuck with 1 small bed?
thereuare Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Ask again at check-in, and if still only receive a room with a double bed, ask if you can upgrade for an additional fee. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.
