colettems Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 I will be traveling with my husband and two boys (9 and 12) to NYC 6/27-7/5/2010. Found this on hotwire....3* Downtown SOHO with the following amentities...restaurant, business center, high speed internet access for $95/night. Saw on another thread a win for what looks to be this same hotel for Holiday Inn Soho...Any thoughts about the chances that it is the same hotel? And is this an ok area for us? We will be doing touristy things all over Manhattan from the Statue of Liberty to Central Park, so really need somewhere centrally located or accessible to subway system without too much trouble. Thanks!
AaronJB Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 Welcome to Betterbidding! :)I think it would likely be the Holiday Inn. Personally, if you are going to be seeing sights all over the city, I would generally recommend trying to stay at least a bit further towards Midtown. On the other hand, this seems like a pretty fantastic deal for this property and while the location is not the absolute most optimal for getting around, the price is right - and it's often difficult (and occasionally VERY difficult) to find reasonable rates for quad/4 occupancy in NYC.What would be your desired max budget per night? Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.
colettems Posted January 11, 2010 Author Report Posted January 11, 2010 I think $150/night if we can find it...maybe a little less considering taxes, etc. That's why we are interested in this one. Would there be any advantage to this location for managing the crowds to/from fireworks on July 4th?Have another question to make sure I understand...if I put in for a room with 2 adults and 2 kids, I am guaranteed sleeping for 4 people...is that correct?
thereuare Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 Generally speaking midtown is more centrally located than Downtown, but Downtown is still do-able, so for the right price it can be a worthwhile option. It really depends what you're looking for from this stay... if you want a 'luxury' NYC experience this probably isn't it... but if you'll be out and about all day and looking for a clean place to lay your head at the end of the day for a good price, then this will probably suit your needs. As AaronJB pointed out, getting a great deal on a hotel for quad occupancy in NYC can be though. As far as the fireworks, i'm not sure if you plan on attending the fireworks or are trying avoid them, but i wouldn't adjust my weeklong plans based upon this one nite event. colettems Posted January 11, 2010 Author Report Posted January 11, 2010 For the fireworks I was just thinking and I could be totally wrong, staying downtown would be easier to walk to the hotel afterwards than cramming in with everyone else on the subway. And point taken not to plan the trip around that one night.Yes, I think this seems like a good deal even for the inconvenience when we are going uptown. But we have no subway where we live (Houston area) and at least for the first couple trips, I am sure my boys will see the subway as an attraction in itself!!We're not looking for luxury, we'd leave the kids home for that, just a clean safe hotel. We plan to be out and about most of the days. Thanks for all the info.
AaronJB Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 The subway is definitely neat as a kid. Heck, even as an adult I still think it's pretty neat in Chicago when the "L" train suddenly heads from the elevated tracks underground just outside the downtown area. You could also split this stay between two properties (what would appear to be the HI discussed above does seem to also be appearing when I search for 7/1-5, for example), but the average per night would almost certainly be higher than just the HI deal for all the nights.
thereuare Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 For the fireworks I was just thinking and I could be totally wrong, staying downtown would be easier to walk to the hotel afterwards than cramming in with everyone else on the subway. The fireworks will likely be seen from just about anyplace along the river on the east side (assuming they return there this year... last year it was on the west side due to the 150th Anniversary of the Hudson River (or something like that))Regardless, it should be easy enough to walk east (or west) from your hotel and get to a viewing point, i wouldn't bother with the subway leaving such a crowded event. I'll also add that if you want a good spot, you'll need to be there HOURS ahead of time, and you may decide it's not a productive use of your vacation time :)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help. colettems Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 Got it booked...it was the Holiday Inn Downtown, 138 Lafayette Street...it seems to also be known as Holiday Inn Soho. We got it for the 4 of us for $95/night so I am happy with that. Thanks for your help. And I did link to HOTWIRE through this website. I will post it on the calendar too.
