Hi!

I just checked the Hotwire list and it was very useful. What I'm llooking for is a nice, clean hotel, 3* and up, preferable in Midtown West, Times Square, Madison Square Garden or Theater District. I would like it to be close to the main subway lines and in a good location so its easier to move around.

What do you reckon is a good choice? I would like to spend $150 tops (including tax) for a room for 2 people.

Here are mi guesses for the hotels:

1. Hudson Hotel or Novotel

2. Doubletree Chelsea

3. On the Avenue

4. Radisson Martinique

5. Roosevelt Hotel or Tudor Hotel

6. Marrakesh

Am I right on the guesses? How can I be sure that the room I bid on includes 2 beds?

Thank you very much for your help!

Are you also seeing internet w/the MTC property? Or the Chelsea property?

The Hudson is in a very nice area, but the hotel is not going to be everyone's cup-of-tea and rooms are quite small. The two Central Park properties are not optimally located for sightseeing and the Tudor is a bit far E in the MTE area. I like the idea of the Doubletree Chelsea (which is a newer hotel) or - if the hotel's look and feel appeal - the Hudson.

The 3.5* MTE could be the Tudor, Doubletree Met or Roosevelt. However, the Doubletree Met is $115 via Orbitz.com, and coupon code WELCOME10 takes 10% off = $103.5, so for only a few dollars more than the Hotwire reservation, you know what you're getting. I'd recommend the Doubletree in that case.

Please use the site's Orbitz, Hotwire or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.

Thank you for your answer!

I checked in Orbitz with the promotion code and it said the hotel is no eligible for that promotion code (WELCOME10), but I still think its a very good deal.

What are your thoughts on the Holiday Inn in Soho? I reviewed the hotel list and I think its the one I saw in Hotwire for $95 per night. I was checking the rest of the hotels I mentioned previously in the post and some of them are located way above than what I was looking for, which is below 38, do you have any other suggestions on my price range with this location?

Thanks a lot!

Odd, as the WELCOME10 coupon works for me for the Doubletree Met - you could also try FABSAVE10.

If you are looking for properties lower in NYC, the Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel is $114.75 on Orbitz, plus 10% off using FABSAVE10 or WELCOME10. That hotel gets very good reviews and offers free breakfast.

Thank you for using the site's Orbitz.com, HOTWIRE.com or PRICELINE links.

...so its easier to move around.

Generally speaking, Soho/Downtown is going to be less convenient than midtown for the average visitor's destinations. This Holiday Inn does have decent subway access to the N,R,W,Q trains as well as the 6 train, which will take you most places in the city with one/none tranfers... but it's still going to be a good 15-20+ minute trip before you get towards midtown.

You're right, I was looking at the rates for the Doubletree in Chelsea. Actually I really liked it and the rates are quite reasonable, do you know if its any good?

The Best Western Bowery, is it located in China Town?

Thanks!

The Doubletree Chelsea initially had some problems with the opening (which was delayed), but has otherwise gotten mostly good reviews. The BW gets excellent reviews and is right near the Chinatown area.

I've been reading reviews on the Doubletree on Chelsea and the BW is much better.

Still I'm not very convinced on the BW because I don't particularly like Chinatown, especially the smells, do you know any other good/cheap hotel below 38th street?

Thanks!!

What is it that you want to stay below 38th Street? You mention a convenient location with easy access to 'everything', and i think hotels betwen 38th and 59th more fit the bill than hotels below 38th... which isn't to say that areas below 38th are inconvenient, but you're more likely to have multiple subway lines nearby being more in midtown than south of 38th St.

Since we've already been to NY, my friend and I thought we might be spending a bit more time shopping and hanging out (shops, restaurants, bars, broadway plays) than actually sight seeing.

We thought that maybe it would be more convenient to stay downtown rather than in midtown because the "trendy" locations to hang out are Soho, Meatpacking, Village, Chelsea, etc.

However we want to be located close to the major subway lines in order to have access to all Manhattan areas easily cause we'll still want to move around a bit, so I definitely get your point that maybe midtown is a better pick.

Do you know any cheap/good hotel located in a "trendy" area? Or do reckon we definitely should stay above 38th? We don't know what to do!

Another friend of mine is also going to NY and his main purpose is to check out Columbia University, so he wants to stay in the vicinity of the area, do you know any good-cheap hotels where he can stay for five nights (Jan 30- Feb 04)? All he has seen for low fare are hostels...

Thanks a lot!

Above 38th St / below 59th St should serve as a very good launching pad to get there you want to go each day. More importantly, it's where the majority of hotels are located, so you're more likely to find success and a better deal in this area. Go to MAPS and HOTELS and do a 10 mile radius search of "NYC"... see how the hotels plotted are much more dense in the area i'm refering to than below 38th St and Downtown?

Thanks for all your help!

I just booked a double bed room at the Holiday Inn Manhattan 6th Ave on booking.com from Jan 30-Feb 04 for $710 (including all taxes), I think it was a good deal, Orbitz was a bit more expensive.

Thanks again!
