Want to get good deal for 6th of Dec to 9th. saw this hotel $220prpn, times square. boutique smoke free business centre.

The hotel is just to the South of the TS area, but it falls within the Chelsea-MSG area on HOTWIRE.

Do you know if its better to leave it closer to when we are going? would they bring down the cost to get rid of rooms?

In NYC, just the opposite can happen if there's something going on on these dates - prices can ramp higher. There's no way to know.
