GeorgeN Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Hi All,We have booked via HOTWIRE the W Hoboken for 4 nights ($129 USD a night + taxes). We have the regular room, upon checking with Hotel they said we can upgrade for $20 USD a night to either the Wonderful Room or Spectacular Room which both have views of Manhattan.Does anyone know what the regular room is like and also what type of view? Is it worth the upgrade? We are staying from Dec 27th to Dec 31st and it is myself + wife + our 6 month old Son... Any info would be appreciated! Thanks :)Also - does anyone have any good Restaurants in and around the area of the Hotel? We are travelling from Canada so that first night in we just want to stay local... then hit Manhattan following day! Thanks!!!
thereuare Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding!Congratulations on your success and thank you for sharing your results with the board. Can you please add a reply to this thread with the amenities shown before your purchase... you can still view this information by going to HOTWIRE and clicking the MY ACCOUNT link near the top right of their home page.I'm guessing your 'regular' room is what they list also refer to as a 'cozy' room, and from what i understand based upon another recent poster, the $20 upgrade to a 'wonderful room' is worth the additional expense.I'm very familiar with this area so when you post the amenities let me know what type of food you like and dinner budget and i'll send you some dinner recommendations (keeping in mind you need some place that is kid/family friendly)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. GeorgeN Posted November 18, 2009 Author Report Posted November 18, 2009 Hi,Perhaps a steakhouse (not too pricey!) or some type of Italian or Greek restaurant that would offer grilled chicken. Is Elizabeth Street one of the main street's in Hoboken? Would it be a street to take a stroll on, eat some dinner... grab a coffee etc?

Ed A Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 hiwashington street is the main strip in hoboken, where the majority of restaurants / bars are located. also, there are a few on the waterfront (sinatra drive). washington street is 2 blocks up from your hotel, and sinatra drive is a half block down towards the waterfront.a decent steakhouse is arthur's steakhouse on 3rd and washington street. not pricey, and decent selection. there is a place called "it's greek to me" farther up on 6th and washington that has all sorts of greek cuisine (as well as your standard sandwiches and burgers). i ate there once and it was pretty good.as for italian, there is a place called margaritas but it's farther up, i think on 10th and washington, that has really good oven brick pizza and pasta.finally, if you like mexican food, try charritos. i forget the exact address but it's not too far from your hotel, on washington street. really good food.for coffee.. idk, not a big coffee fan myself, lol. theres a dunkin donuts, starbucks, and panera on washington street where you can have some.
nycbaggirl Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 I am very familar with both the W Hotel and Hoboken. Having seen all of the rooms at the W (we had our wedding reception there). I would say $20 is worth every penny of upgrading your room. The cozy rooms have no view and over look the air conditiong units of the ball room. Also there is only room for one bed (may even be a double). I would say it would be a very tight fit for the three of you assuming you need to add a crib. There is only one cozy room per floor of the hotel. The only difference between the Wonderful Room or the Spectacular Room is the floor you are on. The Wonderful Room is floors 3-10 and Spectacular Room is floor 10-18. I may be off a floor or two here. So I am assuming the $20 would be an upgrade from the cozy to the Wonderful room. They would probably charge $50 to go from cozy to Spectacular room which is not worth it in my option, but the upgrade to the wonderful is a must.Another piece of advice is when you checking in ask for an uptown view. I personally perfer the uptown view as you can see the Empire State building. The downtown view is not bad but it does overlook the empty lot next to the building. I would not pay any extra to upgrade from the Wonderful to Spectacular room unless the view is very important to you.The W Hotel has Hoboken's only offical Steak House called Zylo. They are usually pretty busy so revervations maybe required. If you are just looking for good food you can get that at a lot of the bar restruants in the area. Brass Rail is very close to the W and is also pretty child friendly but I would not say their prices are pretty similar to Zylo.On a side note I know traveling with kids is not easy. There is a Kings Grocery store right next to the W Hotel. So that should help you stock up on anything you need during your stay with your little one. Enjoy- Hoboken is a very kid friendly town these days. Do you know how you are getting from the airport to the Hotel? If you want to save some money you can ask the W for a local car service number. You call them whenyou land and it will cost you $25 USD max. If you take a cab from Newark (which I assume is wher you are coming from) they will charge you $50. Enjoy your trip.
GeorgeN Posted November 19, 2009 Author Report Posted November 19, 2009 Ed A - Your a good man! Excellent reply and thanks for the places you mentioned... i'll be sure to print this out and select a place from this list!!!NYC Girl - Awesome info, thank you! I will look at upgrading the room, it is $20 or $30 a night for upgrade... we want a King size bed and i'll ask for the uptown view as well! Thanks for the extra info on restaurants / grocery store as well...We are actually driving in from Toronto! Thanks again to all of you for your replies - i really do appreciate it!!!
GeorgeN Posted November 19, 2009 Author Report Posted November 19, 2009 Ooohh 1 more thing....Parking!?! I know it is $35 per 24 hour period (with in's and out's) allowed at the Hotel. Do any of you know any other places or local lots to park for cheaper? Does not really matter if in's or out's are allowed... don't plan on using the car much during our stay, maybe just once when we head to Astoria / Queens to see some relatives but otherwise plan is to take the Train into Manhattan etc.Just trying to cut into a few $'s savings if possible. Thanks Again!!!!
nycbaggirl Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 Again I researched parking for my guests and didn't really find a better option. You can save yourself maybe $5 or $10 a day by parking in the self park lot across the street from the W. The lot is right across the street so when you pull into the W have them unload your luggage. Then simply drive right out the front into the garage across the street. Just double check you can get your car out at the time you want it. The garage across the street is not 24 hours. You can not come and go as you wish from this garage. Hoboken has pretty tough parking with everything is either metered or requiring a resident permit. The W has a acura shuttle which will drop you off within a couple mile radius of the Hotel for free. This does not include the airport or the city but if you want to go uptown Hoboken or to the ferry that should help. The ferry is a very nice ride to and from Hoboken so make sure you look into that once you arrice. You would like that much better with a stroller then lugging it up and down the path train steps. The ferry also has a free bus once you arrive in NYC to various points in the city and it's included in the price of the ticket. Just speaking from experience when friends with kids visit. They always prefer the ferry to the path train. www.nywaterways.comEnjoy your stay.
GeorgeN Posted November 19, 2009 Author Report Posted November 19, 2009 Great info! Thank youuuu very much :) We will for sure look into taken the ferry... even at night time do you consider the ferry? Your insight and information is great!
nycbaggirl Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 I always prefer the ferry over the path but it depends where you are in the city. On your return trip to Hoboken you probably will do better with the Path. The ferrry will drop you off on 14th Street in Hoboken then you would have to call the W to send the shuttle or call a taxi. The path will drop you three blocks from the hotel.
thereuare Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 The ferry is a nic(er) ride than the PATH but also a LOT more expensive (~$7/pp ow vs. $1.40-$175/pp for the PATH) and is not worth the additional money, imo (unless you need to be on the west side of Manhattan)... especially since with the ferry you need to look at the schedule (runs 2-3x per hour), whereas the PATH for the most part is just "show up and take the next one that comes".If you walk out of the W and make a right (towards the water) and the another right (heading south) follow that path to the PATH train and after crossing the port authority parking lot you'll see an elevator which will take you down to the PATH train, avoiding the need to carry a stroller down the stairs. As well, once you're below street level via this elevator, head to the right and their is a wheelchair/stroller accessible turnstile wide enough to pass thru without carrying a stroller overhead. Ed A Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 the meters in hoboken do not operate on sundays. if you can find a metered spot on saturday night after 9pm (or before 9pm, just make sure you feed enough quarters to last you until 9pm sat. night), then you don't have to move your car all day sunday, and it will be free parking. just don't forget to move it sunday night, otherwise you'll get a ticket monday morning.
