canadianguy83 Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 HiI'm planning a trip to new york city from in early december, tenatively the 6th till the 11th. I was thinking preferably 4*, as i'd be hoping for a place with 2 doubles or atleast a double + cot (its just two people so its not crucial), is this feasable for under $200/night? Area isn't terribly important as long as its in Manhatten, There's no weekend nights involved (i thought that would help?) Thanks in advance for the advice
AaronJB Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Welcome to the site. :)A few issues:1. NYC during early December is quite expensive w/people heading to NYC for the holiday decor and/or shopping. $200 is probably not going to be enough for a 4*, especially with HOTWIRE showing 4*'s at $300+ for these days (and that is when searching for double occupancy; more people than that and the prices will rise.2. PRICELINE only guarantees 1 bed and nowhere is this more true than NYC. If you need to guarantee bedding for more than 2 people, I would instead recommend HOTWIRE. If you are 3-4 people Let us know your thoughts about the bedding issue and we can then make suggestions from there. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links.
canadianguy83 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 Thanks for the reply,I'm fine with going a little over the $200 mark, thats just more of a ballpark. I have seen from hotwire that its about $320 during this time period, in my experience with priceline in other cities priceline is usually significantly cheaper if done right. I was just hoping for some sorta estimate as if its significantly over 200 then i'd consider only staying 4 nights in NYC.I've read that "most" 4* places will offer 2 doubles or atleast a cot in NYC (i know this is not the case for 3* and 2* hotels). It is for two people. cheersand i will use the link
thereuare Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 ...in my experience with priceline in other cities priceline is usually significantly cheaper if done right.PRICELINE is usually cheaper than HOTWIRE, but not significanly, imo. With HOTWIRE rates currently at $300+ i would think that a equivalent PRICELINE win at less than $200 would be unilkely.Certainly no harm in trying for what you want first, but based upon current rated i'd consider it a very low probability.I've read that "most" 4* places will offer 2 doubles or atleast a cot in NYCNot sure where you read this but i don't believe this to be the case.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Thanks for using our PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. canadianguy83 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 the bit about cots/double beds i got from reading the reviews of the 4* hotels in the various NYC areas on this site, people have recurrently mentioned being able to get the bed option they needed-obviously its not a guarentee but i got the impression that its much more likely than with 2-3* hotels. i guess i'm looking to balance the risk of not getting the two doubles in a NYC 4* (during peak xmas season) vs the discount from priceline over hotwire (where i can select 3 people and be ensured 2 beds?). any insight on this would be greatly appreciated even if its just a best guess at the numbers of each..
thereuare Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I would not recommended to use PRICELINE for double occupancy in NYC (imo). If you were going to take the risk i'd sooner do so with HOTWIRE where you have a guess as to the hotel you will received, searching for double occupancy, so at least you know that the hotel's standard room may come with two beds (ie- it's not considered an upgrade) or that at least the room isn't so small that it can't accomodate a rollaway, air mattress (which you purchase), or have somebody sleep on the floor. These are "worst case scenarios" if you decide to take the risk and purchase for only double occupancy, but my first comment still holds true... i wouldn't recommend booking a NYC hotel for double occupancy when you'll more than that. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. canadianguy83 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 Alright, so i'll put in a few lowish bids once and a while with PRICELINE but from what you are saying i'm going to probably go another route. Does HOTWIRE guarentee two beds if you book triple occupancy, i've heard conflicting opinions on this, if it isn't i'll just give up and book a two double room the old fashioned way :)
thereuare Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 HOTWIRE guarantees sleeping accomodations for everyone you include in your search. Usually this means two beds, but it could be a room with one bed plus a pullout sofabed or a rollaway brought into the room as a second 'bed'.Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. canadianguy83 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 i just reserved a 3* for $275 (the hotel at times square) based on good tripadvisor reviews, and its guarenteed two double beds. So i think i'll probably just keep that unless something really cheap pops up on hotwire. thanks for the advise
