Scandic85 Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 hey, just encountered this board and read quite a lot interesting about PRICELINE. Thanks to everyone, helping the others and to the administrators for the good moderation. So I learned a lot, but now its time to create tactics for my first Priceline-booking.Date: 11/26 - 12/03Location: Manhattan preferred, maybe Brooklyn or Long Island CityStar rating: 2 or up (good location and tripadvisor-rating is more important than the star rating)I saw some good deals in the Calendar of Wins, e.g.Millenium Hilton, Chelsea for 120Roosevelt, Midtown East for 145But I think on my dates it will be quite more expensive, as it seems. Unfortunately the most Wins in the calendar are 3* or up, so I'm not sure what the right price for 2* oder 2,5* will be. Price limit will be up to 150 (without tax).Maybe someone could support me a bit, thanks in advance!Ben
AaronJB Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Welcome to the site. :)A couple of issues:1. I wouldn't really recommend bidding under 2.5* for NYC - you may run into some "less-than-ideal" possibilities.2. A week-long stay may be more difficult to bid for - are you willing to split your stay if need be?3. What would be your max bid (including tax) per night. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.
Scandic85 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 hey Aaron, thx for your reply and your suggestions:As I've read lots of customer ratings the last few days, I fully agree with you, that 2* or lower would not be a good idea, so I'll focus on 2,5* or up.Splitting the stay will also be an alternative, actually it maybe nice to get to know different sites of Manhattan. But how to find out, which split day would be the best? Through hotwire? Or through sites like Expedia, where you could see specific day rates?Maximum bid per night, including tax is about 160$, which is not too much, I know... But hopefully it will be enough. Long Island City would also be an alternative, I saw that the HolidayInn Manhattan view got good reviews, but some people expected some security problems through the neighborhood...Sure I'll use the links, to support the nice help of this board!

Scandic85 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 Zones: Actually all zones would be ok, without Brooklyn and Long Island City (see my comment above, maybe the HI Manhattan View would be ok)Yes, we'll fly into NYC, landing in EWR at 4.10 pm.

Scandic85 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 thx for your advice, but I've no luck bidding the way you described... always rejected...Maybe last years November was a better time, as one could see in the Priceline and Hotwire Calendar of Wins, there were many last-minute bids at very low rates...
thereuare Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Last year at this time was the start of the financial meltdown of Lehman Brothers failing and there was fear in the streets... lots of hotels with last minute business traveller cancellations and leisure travellers staying close to home for awhile with the uncertainty of the world at that time. Romelle Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Splitting the stay will also be an alternative, actually it may be nice to get to know different sites of Manhattan. But how to find out, which split day would be the best? Through hotwire? Or through sites like Expedia, where you could see specific day rates?Looking at Hotwire one day at a time is one way to figure out a split. Another is either Expedia or the retail side of priceline, where they list the rates day by day. The idea, of course, is to bid the higher day(s) separately from the lower ones. Bid the lower ones first, and maybe PL will offer you their add-a-night feature. This can be at either your bid rate, or higher. If you don't choose to accept this, you then go on and bid the higher rated night(s). FYI - You do encounter an additional PL fee with each separate winning bid.It can be worth your while checking the "My Rewards" area on PL. Sometimes they put a bonus there. If you have a Happenings book, there is a coupon there good for $10 a night bonus while bidding PL. Romelle
