Priceline Hotel: 3.5* NYC (MTW) Club Quarters Rockefeller Center

I am attending an event in NYC on 34th st. (Penn Station) on October 11th. Fly in the 11th in the am, fly out on the 12th in the pm. I have used priceline to book rooms in other cities before when price was my only objective, and not location or convenience. This is my first time to NYC, and I am trying to be price conscious and have a centrally located hotel in Manhattan.

I know this is last min, so I have a reservation already (which I can cancel) for a 2.5 star on 39th st. at $189 (220 w/tax) for the single night, with free wireless. Now im calmly trying to save $50-$100, and/or get a better property. I will be using public transit and walking, and internet connection is very important (esp for free?), but not a total deal breaker.

So question 1 is - should i use Hotwire or Priceline. I understand the premise of both, and it seems like there might be a chance to save more money with priceline. I just saw on hotwire (yes i clicked through from here :-)) a midtown central 3.5 star hotel for $142 (173 w/tax). It only has 2 amenities listed - high speed internet access and restaurant, and a 95% approval rating. I'm thinking this is perhaps the Club Quarters i see online? I am open to ideas and opinions as i am flexible, and want to make sure that im not missing any details as i weigh my options.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

It comes down to what's more important to you... price or location? PRICELINE will usually be cheaper than HOTWIRE, but HOTWIRE gives you the ability to take an educated guess as to the property you may be receiving (and thus an educated guess as to its location)

If you re-run your HOTWIRE search are you still only seeing two amenities for the 3.5* MTC property? (i'm seeing a 3.5* for $142/nite but it has 3 amenity icons)

What hotel is your back-up? If it came down to a better hotel for the same price or a similar hotel for the same price, which would be your choice?

I just re-ran my hotwire search, and indeed it now shows a fitness icon (I swear that wasn't there yesterday). Listed are: Fitness Center; Restaurant(s); High-speed Internet Access. Choosing this would meet my goal of saving around $50, but that savings is diminished if the internet is going to cost $25 to add on. But if I can save even more, it might be worth the uncertainty.

My backup reservation is at the Hampton Inn South Times Square on 39th, which I know will be clean, I think is somewhat new, and again has free wi-fi, and breakfast (which i can give up if im going to save significantly somewhere else). Plus it

I"m guessin the 3.5* property, with Fitness icon, is the Club Quarters Midtown.

So do you want to bid for a 3* or higher in the MTW and TS zones... then if rejected include MTE in the mix? (or is price most imporant and you'd prefer the least expensive of the three?) Also, did you want to try for the least expensive 3* or better OR are you willing to bid higher for a higher rated hotel?

Did you want to set your maximum bid at $142 (or so) given the HOTWIRE offer... or is that not a viable option for this stay?

Given the relatively close proximity, I think that the least expensive of the three is the best option for me. Since this is my first trip to NYC, i am having the slightest difficulty really understanding the scope of distance in Manhattan. In other cities the subway and walking have never been a problem, so im up for the challenge. In fact I just went back to the priceline map, and I think I should add the convention center area (seems close to Penn Station) before MTE

If you're willing to take the subway, Chelsea, MSG, MTW, Times Square should all get you within one avenue of Penn Station w/o a tranfer (using the Penn Station subway stops at 34th St and Eigth Ave, 34th St and Seventh Ave... or if you end up on a subway line that goes to 34th St and Sixth Ave it'll be on Avenue walk to Penn Station)

I would think any of the 4 zones above would be your best bet... if you get lucky it may even be walkable, if not, it would be a short subway ride.

That is GREAT advice - thank you. I had been looking at the subway map but your advice helps much better. I will go with all 4 zones then, but ill choose one to start with, I think MTW or TS for fun. What order would you reccomend going with on the 3*? Anything else i need to take into account before pouncing on priceline?

I would recommend bidding all four zones in your first 'cycle'... not yoru first bid, but your first 'cycle', as this will give you more bidding opportunities and the ability to gradually increase your bid.

For example, if you choose all four zones as acceptable you could bid as follows:

Select 3* MSG ...

Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 3* Chelsea ...

Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 3* TS ...

Select 3* MTW ...

Select 3* MSG and Chelsea ...

Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 3* TS and MTW ...

Awesome and done! On first try $110 accepted at Club Quarters, Rockefeller Center. Free Wi-fi will be awesome, and it looks like the E line goes from Penn Station to Rockefeller Center! Thanks a bunch for your help!
