catvonc Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Dates of trip: 10/02/09-10/10/09Budget: $110 and under/nightPreferred Areas: LONG ISLAND CITYMANHATTAN-(although I am well aware that's pretty much impossible with the budget we have)MSGCPSESBMTEMTWStars: 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5We will not have a car during the trip, which is why we are hoping to find something in Long Island City. Most of the hotels there seem to have fairly easy access to a quick subway ride into Manhattan. Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide.
thereuare Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding!Would you really rather stay in Long Island City than Downtown Manhattan (and perhaps even UES or UWS)?Were you looking to try all areas of Manhattan first before adding Long Island City, or include all acceptable zones in hopes for the lowest price acceptor? Were you looking for the highest rating hotel your budget will allow OR looking for the cheapest 2* or better? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. catvonc Posted September 25, 2009 Author Report Posted September 25, 2009 Oh wow, you are fast! Thank you. I'm sorry, I should have clarified more...First of all, I would definitely take any area of Manhattan over Long Island City. I'm not willing to go under 2 stars to saty there though. I'd prefer not to have to dive all the way down to 2 star, but if we have to, well then it is what it is. Our priority is to really be in Manhattan close to public transit and the goings on of the city. We aren't concerned with noise and such and don't really need any luxury accomodations. Just a clean, comfortable place to lay our heads at night. Long Island City is our final choice because of its close proximity to Manhattan. I do have a backup reservation at the Holiday Inn Manhattan View already-but its for $129 per night and I do NOT want to dip that far into our trip funds to stay there. Its a last resort of sorts for us-just in case the bidding does not work out. I only got that rate by usingthe government special rate. Thanks again.
thereuare Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 I would definitely take any area of Manhattan over Long Island City...but you didn't include Downtown, UES, UWS, Chelsea, etc. as any of your acceptable zones above. So exactly what do you want to try first? A 3.5* in Manhattan? (very doubtful given your budget but if you want to try we're willing to suggest) If so, excatly which zones, by PRICELINE name, are you willing to accept? If 3.5* fails for Manhattan, is your next gameplan to try for a 3* hotel in Manhattan? (vs. trying for a hotel in Long Island City) Do you intend to go down to 2* in Manhattan before trying Long Island City at all?My own side note, be cautious bidding below 3* in Manhattan... while some hotels at this star rating may be acceptable, others may not, and with the opaque providers you don't get to choose which type you will get. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. catvonc Posted September 25, 2009 Author Report Posted September 25, 2009 Thanks for that side note. That information helps me out plenty. I guess I should break it down better: Here's what I'd like first:3* in these areas:ChelseaCentral Park SouthMTEMTWEmpire stateMadison SquareTimes SquareUESUWSSohoIf those all fail, I'd like to then try for:3*Long Island CityAfter you giving me that side note info-I really don't think I want to risk trying a 2* in Manhattan. So then I guess I would like to try 2.5* in Long Island City.
thereuare Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Well i woudln't exactly jump into LIC either, as i'm not a fan of the area, but admittedly am not a familiar with the area as much as i am with it's NJ equivalent, Jersey City Waterfront. To first try for a 3* in Manhattan...Select 3* Chelsea, CPS, MTE, MTW, ESB...Bid $85, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, TS, UEs, UWS, Downtown...Bid $85, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, CPS, MTE, MTW, ESB...Bid $90, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* Chelsea, TS, UES, UWS, Downtown...Bid $90, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* Chelsea, TS, MTE, MTW, ESB...Bid $95, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, CPS, UES, UWS, Downtown...Bid $95, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* Chelsea, CPS, UES, MTW, ESB...Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, TS, MTE, UWS, Downtown...Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* Chelsea, CPS, MTE, UWS, ESB...Bid $105, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, TS, UES, MTW, Downtown...Bid $105, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* Chelsea, CPS, MTE, MTW, Downtown...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, TS, UES, UWS, ESB...Bid $110Any questions feel free to ask. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. catvonc Posted September 26, 2009 Author Report Posted September 26, 2009 Thank you again for your help. I tried all the scenarios and wasn't able to luck up on anything in Manhattan...so I had my husband try using Long Island City as one of the zones. We won on the third bid...Holiday Inn Long Island City-Manhattan View for $102. 10/02/09-10/10/09. Its a 3 star and a block from the subway-I also had placed a backup reservation with them on our state government rate and the PRICELINE rate is still saving me about $37 per night- works for me!
