Double_Downon11 Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 I've decided to surprise my wife and take her to NYC this weekend. I just booked the flights and will arrive this Saturday departing on Tuesday (late morning). Obviously, NYC is very active for booking and I see there have been some really good wins over the past couple of months but wondered where I should begin. I am not familiar with NYC at all but would like to try and get a 4* hotel in either MTE/MTW or another area close by that would be recommended. To be honest, I am not quite sure where to start so any help would be appreciated. I am hopefully to stay under $150 USD per night if possible. Thanks in advance.
Double_Downon11 Posted August 31, 2009 Author Report Posted August 31, 2009 Well my hopes of getting a hotel in the MTE/MTE/TS area of $150 was obviously pipe dream. I am just got rejected at my recent $180 bid for a 4* hotel and expect that because it's last minute it will be well over $200 by the time I get a bid accepted. Stay tuned.
Double_Downon11 Posted August 31, 2009 Author Report Posted August 31, 2009 Just an update on my progress (or lack of)...I started bidding at $140 for a 4* in TS/MTE/MTW with increments of $10 each time and including other zones (without same star ratings) and made it to $200 but was rejected in all three areas. I then started back at $135 per night at 3.5* hotels in the same areas and just got rejected at $170. Here are the details:4* - TS - $140 - rejected4* - MTE - $140 - rejected4* - MTW - $140 - rejected4* - TS/Chelsea - $150 - rejected4* - MTE/Chelsea - $150 - rejected4* - MTW/Chelsea - $150 - rejected4* - TS/Brooklyn - $160 - rejected4* - MTE/Brooklyn - $160 - rejected4* - MTW/Brooklyn - $160 - rejected4* - TS/LIC - $170 - rejected4* - MTE/LIC - $170 - rejected4* - MTW/LIC - $170 - rejected4* - TS/MSG - $180 rejected4* - MTE/MSG - $180 - rejected4* - MTW/MSG - $180 - rejected4* - TS/UES - $190 - rejected4* - MTE/UES - $190 - rejected4* - MTW/UES - $190 - rejected4* - TS/Brook/Chelsea - $200 - rejected4* - MTE/Brook/Chelsea - $200 - rejected4* - MTW/Brook/Chelsea - $200 - rejected3.5* - TS - $140 - rejected3.5* - MTE - $140 - rejected3.5* - MTW - $140 - rejected3.5* - TS/Chelsea - $150 - rejected3.5* - MTE/Chelsea - $150 - rejected3.5* - MTW/Chelsea - $150 - rejected3.5* - TS/LIC - $160 - rejected3.5* - MTE/LIC - $160 - rejected3.5* - MTW/LIC - $160 - rejected3.5* - TS/UES - $170 - rejected3.5* - MTE/UES - $170 - rejected3.5* - MTW/UES - $170 - rejectedI guess my question now is whether I should try another area (MSG or Central Park or Soho) and repeat the same steps. I am not familiar with NYC at all and not sure how these locations compare. Also would I be smart to possibly stay the Saturday night in a 3* - 3.5* hotel then switch to another 4* for the Sunday/Monday night. It's a bit of an inconvenience but might help keep the average price down.Any info would be appreciated.Thanks,
thereuare Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 The other midtown zones you menion should be fine... really not too much of a different given how compact NYC is. (also given the next paragraph, you may also want to consider the ESB zone too)HOTWIRE does have a 4* hotel in the ESB zone for your complete stay for $236/nite with Boutique, Fitness, Smoke Free, Business Center icons and a TA rating of 4.0/5.0. This is a match for the Roger Williams so that would be our best guess and it does generally get very good reviews. (although note that this hotel also charges a $15/day 'service charge' so you need to factor this into your budget as well)SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID is another option as i think you could get a nice 4* for under $150/nite for those two dates. HOWEVER, be aware that Saturday nite may be 'trouble' as some hotels may have a minimum night requirement... searching HOTWIRE for the solo nite of 9/5 shows no availability in any of the midtown zones (at any price!)Let us know your thoughts as to how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. Double_Downon11 Posted September 1, 2009 Author Report Posted September 1, 2009 Thanks as usual for your help. I may look at the Hotwire place you mentioned although there is now a chance we may have a place to stay for our duration. I will post the outcome regardless. Thanks again and I will of course use the PRICELINE links whenever required.
Double_Downon11 Posted September 3, 2009 Author Report Posted September 3, 2009 Well after searching almost every website known to man, good ole Better Bidding and PRICELINE came through for me yet again. Booking a decent hotel last minute for this Saturday was impossible so thanks to family friends we have a place for the first night and was able to book the 4* New York Hilton at a rate of $112 USD for Sunday and Monday. I started the bidding in MTE/MTW at $90 and was relieved when my $112 bid was accepted.Hilton New York Midtown West1335 Avenue Of The Americas New York, New York 10019 212-586-7000See Hotel Website View Map and Directions Check-In Date:Sun, Sep 6, 2009 / After 03:00 PMCheck-Out Date:Tue, Sep 8, 2009 / 12:00 PMThe PRICELINE link was used each time I made a bid. Thanks again for all your help.
