Priceline Hotel: Trouble finding a room 9/10 - 9/14

Hi all,

I've been looking for a decently priced 4* in San Francisco (anywhere downtown) for the past couple of weeks. We'll be in town 9/10 - 9/14. I know there are two conventions that weekend, but I'm surprised I haven't had an offer accepted, going up to 125/night.

What's the consensus on rooms opening up last minute? Is there typically a point after which there's not much chance of something turning up?

There are 28 properties available on HOTWIRE for that time period, but the rates are relatively high. Using this as a rough guide, I think there is a decent chance that prices will drop closer to the date. I would get a cancelable backup and keep bidding until you're right up to your arrival date.

You may need to loosen up and consider 3.5 or 3* properties, but those are still pretty nice. Good luck.

If you research the conventions taking place, are attendees already past the deadline to cancel their hotel reservations and/or be guaranteed the convention rate?

Do the convention run the entire length of yoru stay? If not, is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option?

Please follow-up with whatever you end up doing for this stay... even if it's not PRICELINE or HOTWIRE.

It gives this thread a 'conclusion' rather than leaving future readers wondering if you were successful but forgot to post the results, gave up trying, cancelled the trip, etc.
