Hello,

I have used Priceline successfully on a number of occasions, but now I don't seem to be able to get a bid accepted even though people have been reporting much lower bids getting accepted in the same period.

I have a max. budget of $150 a night for 4 nights. Would prefer not to split my bid into 2 parts, because it's already possible that we will be staying a 5th night and moving to a friend's flat in NYC, so 2 moves might be a bit much.

I first started bidding for 3.5* category at $120, started with Times Square, as somebody reported having won here at $130 in the same period. Went up to $150 by adding zones around, still nothing accepted.

Then moved to 3* and started over with Chelsea at $100, as I saw bids accepted as low as $105 for similar period. Again, up to $150 while adding zones, and still nothing !!!

Plenty of people seem to have winning bids in the same zones for end of September below $150, so why doesn't my offer get accepted?

Please offer me advice!

Btw: rates for that period at the 3* Wyndham in Chelsea are $188 so why on earth won't day accept a $150 bid ???

Thank you,

Michele

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Rates are date specific, so even if there are other wins around the same timeframe for less, demand for your dates could be higher, and therefore require a higher bid to be accepted.

Some hotels don't look at the average nightly rate when determining the required bid to be accepted. If you search the Wyndham Chelsea West for each nite of your stay individually the first nite is $188 but the other nites jump to $300+ (suprisinglyl you can book for $188 for all 4 nites if you include that first nite), but this may explain your rejections up to $150 if this property is looking to see if your bid amount is enough for each nite of your stay on it's own.

Do you want to go with the Wyndham or continue to try PRICELINE?

Thank you for your reply. An average of $188 is just too much for me. So I would appreciate it if you could give me Priceline bidding advice.

I found a deal on HOTWIRE for a 2,5* hotel at $120 in the ESB area for the first 2 nights, next 2 nights are much higher prices. So perhaps I should split my bid in 2 parts anyway?

Not sure if i would recommend a 2.5* hotel in NYC... what are the amenities HOTWIRE associates with the offering?

Have you been to NYC before? Would you consider staying Jersey City (NJ) with easy access to Manhattan via PATH train? (runs 24/7 and goes to midtown in ~15 minutes and downtown in ~10 minutes) You could get a 4* hotel (with great reviews) in this area wihtin your budget, but you do lose quite a bit of the "nyc vibe" that makes NYC special.

What about SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID... staying two nites in Jersey City (at a reduced cost) and then two nites in Manhattan (at the $188/nite rate) which could bring your average to ~$150/nite?

Your thoughts?

I have been to NY 10 years ago (we then stayed at the Edison in Times Square which I remember being basic but ok and reasonably priced), but my boyfriend never has been to NY.

The amenities of the 2,5* in ESB seem to match indeed with the Hampton Inn, so I think I will go for that !

For the next 2 days the only thing reasonably priced is again around $120 for the Central Park Area, but that seems to be the Marrakech, which gets some really bad reviews.

As an alternative I found The Verve hotel in Long Island City which lists for $159 and gets excellent reviews. I could book it and keep trying PRICELINE for the next 2 days. If something good comes up I can always cancel The Verve Hotel.

Any other thoughts?

I've been trying similar dates without much luck either (9/22 to 9/26). I went up to $180 for 4* and $165 for 3.5* (excluding Upper West Side). I'm thinking of staying at the Ramada Long Island City since it's close to the subway and a quick ride to midtown. They have a deal online that saves 20% if you stay 3 nights ($88/night). I have no idea what the area is like since I mostly stay around Midtown.

MicheleD,

If you post the amenities that are associated with the HOTWIRE offering we'll see if we agree with the ID... if the reviews are good then it could be a viable option.

Given your boyfriend's first trip to the city, and yours quite some time ago, i would recommend staying directly in Manhattan. If you were to stay outside of the manhattan, i'd choose the 4* Jersey City area over Long Island City... it's a much nicer area, imo, and would make for a more enoyable stay.

The 2,5* Hotwire has following amenities: Complementary Breakfast, Fitness Center, Business Center, High Speed Internet Access.

That corresponds with the Hampton Inn, the only 2,5* listed in the Hotwire hotel list for ESB.

As for Jersey City vs Long Island City, we have to get to JFK after our stay, so maybe then Queens is a better choice after all. I don't really care too much about the neighbourhood, most people in the reviews seem to feel quite safe, and I've been to dodgier places in the world. My boyfriend is a 6'5'' police officer and I'm 5'10'' myself, so feel quite ok with that.

Any suggestions for good hotels in Jersey City in that price level?

Thank you.

No tripadvisor info to help confirm the 2.5* but my best guess would be the Hampton Inn 35th Street.

It sounds like you're leaning towards LIC, but if you consider Jersey City what appears to be the well reviewed Westin can be had for under $135/nite OR you could bid on PRICELINE and get a 4* hotel in this area (of which all reported to the board are very nice) for perhaps closer to the $110 mark.

I have used your link to succesfully get the Hampton Inn on 35th street at $122 a night for 9/20-22. Will post as a winning bid in a different topic.

Now still finding the best way to find a place for the other 2 nights, 9/22-24... Advice still welcome !

Really had difficulties finding a decent hotel at a decent price in New York for my dates (9/20-24), so decided to try and split up.

Saw this deal on Hotwire and it seemed like the Hampton Inn was the only hotel fitting the description that had been won already, and so did I !

Gets excellent reviews on Tripadvisor so very happy with it !

Now still hoping to find another good deal for the next 2 nights !
