nswensen Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 Hi! I'm new to Priceline/Hotwire. I am planning on staying in Athens, Greece for 3 nights (8/23 through 8?26) and then heading to the island of Santorini for 3 nights (8/26 through 8/30.I've read that Priceline isn't the best to use since its zone for Athens is so huge. Any thoughts on Priceline vs. Hotwire? Does it matter?I'm shooting for 4* or 5* since it seems I can get the best value that way. Also, do they generally have bidding for smaller islands or usually only bigger cities?Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
nswensen Posted August 11, 2009 Author Report Posted August 11, 2009 Hi! I hope I'm posting this in the right place! I'm new to Priceline/Hotwire. yellowdog Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding! We are not ignoring you :) The thing is that i know nothing about Athens or Greece. So it's very difficult to say anything about this. But if you feel that the PRICELINE zone is to big so go with HOTWIRE. Have you search HOTWIRE for your stay and found any hotel? If you're trying to target a specific property then HOTWIRE can often be a better option if you're successfully able to identify it based upon the star rating and amenities shown before your purchase... the trade-off is that HOTWIRE usually costs a little more than PRICELINE, so you need to decide what is most important to you for a given stay, the lowest possible price OR the ability to take an educated guess as to the property you may receive.Admin will join this thread but i hope the information will get you started.Yellowdog.
Romelle Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 If you get on PRICELINE and just type in a nonsense name for a city (i.e. xyz), the next screen will offer you an option of showing you PL's complete list of cities. I went through this process, and it looks like Athens is currently the only bidding option for Greece. PL does add areas from time to time though, so it would be worth checking again for another trip. Romelle
thereuare Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 I don't believe there is any bidding offered in Santorini, but both services offer hotels in Athens. If you look at the PRICELINE map, are you able to accept a hotel anywhere within shaded boundaries of the zone? If not, do any of the HOTWIRE zones work for your needs? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. nswensen Posted August 14, 2009 Author Report Posted August 14, 2009 Bid on PRICELINE (using link here):8/12 for 5*: $72, rejected8/13 for 5*: $77, rejected8/13 my husband bid 5*: $82, rejected8/13 changed to 4*: $79, rejected but got the "up bid by $22" offer; After looking at a few posts I noticed that after other people got that offer they usually won their bid around $7 or $8 dollars higher (not $22) so I figured I was close to winning.8/13 had husband change to 4* and bid: $86, bid ACCEPTED and it was upgraded to 5*! :)Lowest rate on hotel website is 105 euros - about $150 - $64 savings for 4 nights equals $256! That's great!Hotel looks good, just hoping for a double bed and non-smoking room. I'm not sure how difficult it is to request and get. Also used HOTWIRE (link here) as a reference for what to bid on PRICELINE. It had 4.5* and (later) 5* at $89 per night so I knew I wouldn't go over that on PRICELINE. This forum helped a lot! Thanks!
thereuare Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 Congratulations on your success!Glad to see you're happy with the results and that this works well for your plans... a very nice deal for a 5* hotel.Thank you for sharing your win with the board and using our PRICELINE link to begin your bidding.Enjoy your stay.
