The_Hannibal Posted August 2, 2009 Report Posted August 2, 2009 Hi,I am going to NYC from 8-21-09 to 8-26-09. On hotwire I found a deal for a 4* Hotel in Midtown Central with amenities being: fitness, restaurant, business and high speed. It's at 155$/day and in the details it says "tripadvisor rating: 4/5 and 380+ reviews" which sounds to me like the Helmsley Park Lane. Can anybody confirm that this is most likley the Helmsley Park Lane? If so does anybody know wether it is possible to upgrade to "park view"? Looking at the rates on the Helmsley Park Lane website the hotwire.com offer will most likley be "city view".Thanks!
thereuare Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Thanks for the additional post. The Helmsley Park Lane would be my best guess too, but i will raise the one inconsistency in that the actual Tripadvisor ratings are a little 'light' for an exact match (currently TA shows 379 reviews while the HOTWIRE listing states 380+ reviews). I have seen this before as HOTWIRE is using an internal value which sometimes differ slightly from those at Tripadvisor (ie- TA may delete a review or not approve a review, these may increase HOTWIRE's figure but not the actual number of reviews at Tripadvisor), so i do think the Helmsley is the best guess, but point out the above sinice it does lower the confidence level just a bit. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help. Thespian Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Regarding upgrades:It's safe to assume that a room obtained via Priceline or Hotwire will be a basic room with the least desirable location, view, etc. Many people have reported getting nice upgrades at check-in. OTOH, there are hotels that give substandard rooms to opaque customers. The Hilton New York has the dreaded "Priceline rooms," which aren't really that bad, just very small. And at least one hotel in the Affinia group, supposedly an all-suites chain, has a few standard rooms that they don't mention on their own website but do give out to Priceline customers.Whether you get an upgrade (free or paid) depends on many factors: room availability in general, time of check-in, whether the clerk is having a good or bad day, how nice you are to the clerk. Hotels will also upgrade you if they feel they've inconvenienced you or let you down in some way (but not necessarily if you feel etc.).
The_Hannibal Posted August 15, 2009 Author Report Posted August 15, 2009 Thx for the info about upgrades. We'll see what they can do :)For the stats: I now booked it, and as mentioned in this Hotwire NYC thread, it turned out to be the warwick, not the Helmsley Park Lane. Warwick beeing even better though :) Thx for all the help, this is a great board!
