Sunshine Girl Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 We've already booked airline flights for these dates and have been doing research on hotel rates for these dates. Anyone know why the rates are so high for these dates? It's our first trip to NYC and there will be 2 adults and 2 small children traveling and I'm wondering if we will be able to get a 4* hotel for $180 or less. We won't be renting a car so would TS or Midtown Central be okay as far as location and for walking to most of the tourist spots. Some of the 4* and 3.5* rates on HOTWIRE are going for over $200...is this normal for October?
yellowdog Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 Yes, rates are high for your stay, October is an expensive month in NYC. I looked at similar dates and moved on to Jersey City. Better value for the money if you're willing to take the short ride to the city with 2 children. Most of the times can you get better deals with PRICELINE. But PRICELINE only guarantee a room for two adults, that could mean a room with a queen bed only. I can see that you're traveling with 2 children so is this a risk you're willing to take?If you see any hotel at HOTWIRE that you like so please list the amenties HOTWIRE associates with the hotel you're looking at and we'll have a look at this.Post back with your thoughts and we'll go from there.Yellowdog.
thereuare Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 I'll add to the above that while you can sometimes take a risk of using PRICELINE for more than double occupancy (such as family friendly cities such as in the Orlando Disneyworld area where they're accustomed to catering to families and therefore have a high percentate of rooms with two beds), this is not recommended in NYC given the low percentage of rooms with two beds, and many rooms are so small that they can't accomoate a rollaway. In addition to seasonality factors, searching for quad occupancy is another factor likely effecting the high prices you see. Given the low number of rooms with two beds, many hotels may not authorize HOTWIRE to sell rooms at their hotel for more than double occupancy, so the number of otpions are greatly diminished as well.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. Another question, what if I added another child to my room (for a total of 2 adults and 3 kids) - would I be forced to getting two rooms or could I get away with all little ones in one room?
