Freyja Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 How would I go about getting a great deal for a hotel room in NYC for 3 adults in October?
AaronJB Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 Date/s of travel, budget? Desired areas to stay in?PRICELINE does not guarantee 2 beds, so your best option if you need bedding for all 3 people would be HOTWIRE.Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links when you are ready to book.
Freyja Posted July 28, 2009 Author Report Posted July 28, 2009 I think MTE, MTW and Times Square would be most desired areas. We would have no problem sharing a King bed but a double or queen would be too small. Dates are 10/22-10/26.
AaronJB Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 The issue with PRICELINE and NYC is that one cannot guarantee bed type, and many of the rooms are small in NYC - hence, you find a lot of full bed/queen beds. A king is not guaranteed and unfortunately, it probably isn't likely. What would be the budget per night for hotel?
Freyja Posted July 28, 2009 Author Report Posted July 28, 2009 Probably somewhere around $200 including taxes and fees for a 3-4*.
thereuare Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 $200 'all-in' is about a $167 bid price which i don't think is going to be enough for your situation...The issue is to guarantee enough space for the three of you, you'll need to use HOTWIRE. Searching HOTWIRE for 3 adults there is nothing within your budget, and even trying HOTWIRE for 2adults/1child (which guarnatees accomodations for 3 people but you'll need to 'sneak' the 3rd adult) still has nothing within your budget. You might be successful via PRICELINE, but you could easily end up in a sitation with only one bed (and no room for a rollaway)Not sure if this is an option but you could get a hotel in Jersey City (NJ) near a PATH train which is about a 15 minute commute to NYC... it's affordable and the hotels are very nice, but you do lose most of the "NYC vibe" and the convenience factor that comes with staying in NYC.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. AaronJB Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 Idea:Below is a "Stay 3 Nights, Get 1 Free" non-refundable deal via Starwood Hotels (please use the link below)Stay 3 nights, get a 4th night freeIf you search for your dates, one of the options is the Four Points Sheraton Times Square, which is a newer property. If you search for 3 people for your dates, it's $225 per night for a room w/2 beds, fourth night free = $675. Divided by 4 nights = $168.75 per night average, which is about exactly what your budget is. The price is less ($195 per night, fourth night free) if you only search for 2 adults, but then you would have to sneak in the third, and that would be at your own risk.

This looks like a great deal for us. Will discuss it with the other 2 in my group and then tell you what we decide to do. :)
Freyja Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 I'm reading reviews on Tripadvisor for the Four points hotel and many say it appears to be in a dodgy area. Do you know if this is true? Since we will be 3 young females travelling together we definately want to feel safe.
AaronJB Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 I didn't think that this area was bad when I last stayed in NYC, but others/locals more familiar with the area can comment on its current status better. It's right near Times Square.
Freyja Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 Last time I bid through Priceline it was for a 4* in NYC last month. It was only for 2 adults (my husband and I) and I got the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central Station. I requested a King bed and got it upon arrival. Any idea what my chances are for getting that, or a room with 2 doubles, if I were to sneak in the 3rd adult?
AaronJB Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Unfortunately, 2 beds aren't guaranteed w/PRICELINE, nor is bed size in terms of a room w/1 bed. Depends on the day (traffic), hotel (a lot of hotels in NYC have very small rooms and/or very few rooms w/2 beds) and even who you talk to. You could bid on PRICELINE and probably be successful, but it's taking a risk in terms of bedding. If you would like to use PRICELINE and are willing to risk it on the bed situation, let us know and we would be happy to offer suggestions on bidding. Please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links.
Freyja Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 So, it's up to me whether I want to take the chance of possibly squeezing 3 people into a room designed for 2? Or is it against policies?
AaronJB Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 It would be up to you whether you want to try to squeeze 3 people into a room.
Freyja Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 Great. Looks like we might be going with PRICELINE then.Should I start bidding now or closer to the date? Any advice on what would be our best strategy for 4* in Times Square, MTE or MTW?
Freyja Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 Could you please help me identify a 2* in the Central Park area? Shows on Hotwire for $175 for 10/22-10/26 and has fitness center, restaurant and business center.
thereuare Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 So, it's up to me whether I want to take the chance of possibly squeezing 3 people into a room designed for 2? Or is it against policies? In many places it's against policy as well (against fire code)... but that's not to say it isn't done. :)Is $167/nite your maximum bid? Is there a reason you're not also including the CPS zone? (it's considered just as convenient my most... but not sure if there is a hotel there you're trying to avoid or some other reason to avoid the zone)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know the above and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. AaronJB Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 I wouldn't recommend the CP 2*. It hasn't yet been ID'd, but my *guess* would be the Comfort Inn Central Park West. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.
Freyja Posted July 30, 2009 Author Report Posted July 30, 2009 Hoping to go under $167. Even hoping to get a room for around $125, pre tax. CPS is definately an option. Don't know why I didn't mention it in my earlier posts. Any advice on a good strategy?
thereuare Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 At the 4* level you have FIVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTE, MTW, CPS, and TS (and you an also add ESB if you're interested in this zone as well)...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone1...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone2...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone3...Bid $130, if reejected close browser and re-access PRICELINE however you did previously.Select 4* MTE, MTW, CPS, and TS and re-bid zone4 (and you an also add ESB if you're interested in this zone as well)...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone1...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone2...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone3...Bid $150, if reejected close browser and re-access PRICELINE however you did previously.Select 4* MTE, MTW, CPS, and TS and re-bid zone5 (and you an also add ESB if you're interested in this zone as well)...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone1...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone2...Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone3...Bid $170Any questions feel free to ask. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help. Freyja Posted August 9, 2009 Author Report Posted August 9, 2009 I've been bidding every couple of days or so hoping to get a bid for a 4* for $140 (or less) accepted. Been trying Times Square, MTW, MTE, CPS, Empire State Area. Do these dates in general seem difficult?
AaronJB Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 This Fall in NYC in general seems pricey to me, with some stretches worse than others.
