wk76 Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 Hello all, this will my wife and I's first trip to Chicago. We'd like to stay close to all the nightlife, shopping, and restaurants, attractions (i.e. Navy Pier, ) if possible (walking distance) and looking to spend no more than $75-80 per night. Sounds like NMA zone is the place to stay in terms of location and wanted to get an idea as to how I should bid along with the type of star rating I should shoot for. Would be nice to stay in a 4 star hotel but sounds like some of the 3.5 stars are descent as well. Just don't want to fall too far off on the outskirts of the zone where we could potentially end up cabbing/metro'ing it in. Also would be interested in the Northern part of the Millennium Park zone (Hyatt Regency or equivalent) if its easily accessible to all the sights and sounds. We're also looking to hop on the metro to visit other parts of the city so finding a hotel that's metro accessible would be a plus as well. Thanks for your time.
AaronJB Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 If you wanted to low-ball a bid for NMA, I'd try $65 for a 4* in the River North/NMA to see if there are any takers, as rates for these dates seem fairly reasonable for Chicago and $65 has a decent chance of being accepted for River North/NMA.Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchase.
thereuare Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 Just don't want to fall too far off on the outskirts of the zone where we could potentially end up cabbing/metro'ing it inKeep in mind that you can't choose a particular part of the zone, the hotel you receive could be anywhere within the shaded boundaries of the zone.If the zone is too 'broad' for your liking, HOTWIRE may still be a good option as you can sometimes identify the property before your purchase based upon the amenities shown. This will cost a little more than PRICELINE, and still no guarantees that you'll guess correctly :)If you wanted to try up to your maximum bid for a 4* in the NMA zone, you do have FOUR re-bid zones available. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* NMA...Bid $65, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $69, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $73, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $77, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $80Any questions freel free to ask. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know what you decide to do for this stay. AaronJB Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 Quite honestly, the worst case scenario for a 4* on the North end would be the Drake or Millennium Knickerbocker, both of which are still well within walking distance of anything in the area. The 3.5* Ambassador East and 3* Indigo in the Gold Coast area start to get a bit far North, but are still within easy walking distance of Michigan Ave. and are near public transit. Chicago's relatively compact - if one really had to take public transit from the NMA area to the Loop, it's an incredibly brief ride. The only real need for taking public transit in terms of a tourist perspective was if one was in a hurry or didn't want to walk back to the hotel after a long day. Otherwise, Chicago is quite walkable - walking from the North end of downtown to the South end of downtown isn't like walking from Midtown in NYC to Battery Park.
