It will take quite some time to confirm all the hotels above, you can start on your own with the Hotwire Hotel List, but i'd sooner think that you could narrow down the field quite a bit.

What are you looking for from this stay? What is your nightly budget? What type of hotels do you typically stay in? Are you looking for the lowest price or is there some amenity that you're seeking for this trip?

Also, as HOTWIRE will only show one hotel at each star level per zone on a given search (the lowest priced hotel is the one offered) what are you doing to have two different 3.5* properties appear?

I'm thinking of a nightly budget of under $100 after taxes (so maybe $65-$90 nightly rate before taxes, right). It would be nice to have some ammenities - such as a pool, fitness center, or free breakfast (though I know it might be too much to ask). If any of these amenities will cause me to exceed my budget by very much, then I am willing to let go of some of these amenities.

My search criteria in Hotwire is this: 8/30 - 9/1, montreal. Thanks for your help.

I re-checked my search criteria again, and you are right. There is only one hotel shown for each star category. My mistake -- the one other 3.5* hotel is not in Downtown Montreal but Midtown Montreal. So I can remove the one below.
