kelcon Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 Target: 3*+ (or even 2*+) San Francisco budget hotel convenient for sighseeing without car, 9/26-9/28, 1 room, $38 per nightStrategy 1#: $32 (3* Fisherman's Wharf), $36 (+Marina, no star change)Strategy 2#: $32 (3* Fisherman's Wharf), $36 (+Union Square West - Nob Hill, no star change), $38 (+Marina, no star change)I have tried both strategies for the last four days. Without success. Should I still use the second strategy (there is a lot of time to 9/26) or should I modify it (more zones, higher price, lower star level)? Thank you in advance for suggestions.Best regards, Kelcon
Gallus50 Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 This may be do-able, but it is a little ambitious price-wise this early. It can't hurt to keep trying, but be patient. SF is a popular destination in Sept/Oct and the hotels are probably still optimistic about filling their rooms. To be honest, I don't know if you can get a 3* at that rate, but a 2.5 or 2* seems feasible. HOTWIRE rates have dropped for those dates, so hang in there and don't lose patience. (I wouldn't go higher than your goal price so early. If it gets closer to the time, then possibly bid more. You could try lower star levels if that doesn't bother you, but don't raise your price at the same time.)
kelcon Posted July 12, 2009 Author Report Posted July 12, 2009 Thank you for advice. How often should I try? Everyday or seldom?Best regards!
AaronJB Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 I'm not sure this is going to be a realistic price for San Francisco, but I would try daily. Please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links.

Gallus50 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 On second thought, I'm with Aaron JB. You can keep trying, but that price is awfully low. I think it would be possible near the airport, but probably not downtown. Perhaps it might get you a 1*...? No harm trying, though, and you're still very early.
kelcon Posted July 13, 2009 Author Report Posted July 13, 2009 What price would be ok? Maybe I should give up searching for accommodation now and start bidding i.e. in late august? I am not in a hurry. What do you think?Best regards!
Gallus50 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 I don't think you should stop bidding - you never know what might happen. (I got a $55 rate at the 4* Westin SFO for September that was bid months ago.) Most recently, Colfax won a 2.5* (King George) for $40 in June, while someone else won the 2* Mosser Victorian at $50 for August. $40 - $50 might be more realistic for 2 or 2.5*. 3* have gone for as low as $60, but not much lower unless they're at the airport. Look back through the archives and decide what you can pay and what is realistic ...
