We, my wife and I are going to arrive in Puerto Rico on Oct. 16, 2009 at 10:30 PM, and leave for a dive trip on the afternoon of the 17th. The dive boat picks us up at the hotel, at least if it's in San Juan.

We need a room for the night, that hopefully has pickup at the airport. A nice room would be good, but as you see, we won't be there long. I hear there are lockers at the airport, so we could leave our gear there for the night.

How and when should we proceed from here?

I'm just a member, but I'll try to get you started on this. 1st, always a good idea to read the information in the Questions and Suggestions area up at the top, especially the FAQs.

Then, there are different ways to proceed, but an easy one is to just plug your dates into Hotwire (top, left hand side). When bidding via Priceline, one normally can do a little better than the Hotwire rates, but the process will give you a good general idea of what the different star levels might cost. Then you can decide which star level you want to bid.

Also, take a look at the different San Juan hotels listed in the first post in this area. While it is always possible for a new hotel to appear, you will still get a good idea as to the quality and features at the different star levels. And while you are at it, you can follow through, both to the hotels' web sites and to reviews posted under the Hotel Reviews tab.

When you've made your decision as to the desired star level, post back here and somebody will help suggest a bidding strategy. Include the upper limit of your budget.
