I'm checking out the four star Mid-town East hotel with these amenities: Fitness Center, Restaurant, Business Center, High Speed Internet. The current price (6 pm eastern) is at $154 per night. I'm hoping to get the Intercontinental The Barclay. Any chance this is the one? Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm still early in my shopping for a place in NYC. But, I did hear good things about the Barclay. Any tips on getting a good rate at that hotel? I checked Orbitz but the Barclay wasn't on there. Did did advertise the Paramount Hotel at $180 per night (fees included) for my dates. I've never heard of this property though? Any thoughts? Thanks.

I've had friends stay at the Barclay once and they liked it quite a bit. Unfortunately, it's showing at $479 on Orbitz for these dates (possibly something going on at that hotel?)

Are you looking to be in a particular area?

I'm not sure about a particular area because I'm not entirely familiar with the city. Well, my reason for the NYC trip is two-fold: First, I'm competing in a biathalon in Central Park on Sunday, September 6. So, ideally, the hotel would be within walking/riding distance to Central Park. Check-in for the race is at the Boathouse Parking Lot (I've never been to Central Park so I have no idea where that boathouse thing is) and the race starts at East Drive at 74th Street. So, it would be nice if I could get to the check-in without much hassle. My second reason would obviously be for sight-seeing (Times Square, Empire State Building, catch a Broadway show). Hope that helps, and I appreciate your suggestions.

While it would be more of a trek to the race, W Hotel The Court is $179 for these dates on Orbitz, plus it also offers an upgraded ("Spectacular") room. W/the deal0hotel coupon code you would get an additional 10% off. While a bit of a ways from Central Park, this is otherwise a solid location, near Grand Central and a few blocks North of the Empire State Building.

In terms of an Orbitz offering much closer to the park (and also not far from Times Square), the Flatotel is $168 for these dates - 43% off, plus deal0hotel gets an extra 10% off.

In terms of the race, probably the best choice would be 6 Columbus Circle for $151 via Quikbook. This would be an excellent location and put you right by the park (it's right by the SW corner of Central Park.)

Please use the site's Quikbook or Orbitz.com if any of these ideas appeal. Let us know if you have any questions.

I'm seeing a 4* in the CPA with these amenities: Boutique, Fitness, Business, Internet. It's listed at $119 per night for 9/5 - 9/7. Think that this might be the Empire again? Or something else?

Posted

Yeah, I checked out all of those places, their websites, regular rates, and some reviews and none of them really sold me. I guess I'm kind of stuck at the moment. Fortunately, I have a few more days to figure it out. 6 Columbus Circle doesn't sound bad though.

I saw a 4 star in Central Park Area listed this morning at $119 per night with these amenities: Boutique, Fitness, Business, Internet. Do you think it is the Empire? If so, I'd likely take that one.

I checked out the reviews and the Benjamin sounds good. It looks like it's pretty close to Central Park, but not too far from Times Square & the theater district. Where can I find the $155/nt rate that you mentioned?

If you search HOTWIRE (please use this link) for your dates there is a 4* hotel in the MTE zone with:

Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business and a Tripavisor rating of 4.0/5.0 with 300+ reviews

These amenities are a match for previous reports for the Omni and the TA info is consistent with this property as well, so that would be our best guess.

Sorry that it took a while for me to get back on here. I've been traveling for the last few weeks. Anyways, I'm ready to book my NYC trip (9/5 to 9/7) and I saw this 4 star in the Central Park area pop up tonight: Amenenties are: Fitness, Restaurant, Business, Spa. And the price is $179 per night. What might this hotel be?

Unfortunately this property has not yet been identiifed, and i'll add that although this zone covers Central Park there could be areas of this zone which would make it difficult to get to the East side via mass transit.

What is your maximum budget (per nite before fees and taxes) for this stay?

Hello again,

Well, the location is pretty important. I'd like to find a place in the Upper East Side as close to Central Park as possible (near 74th Street). My max price that I'm willing to spend per night is $225 before taxes/fees.

thanks.

The Courtyard Upper East Side is $199 for these dates via Expedia (plus 10JUL coupon code takes another $10 off), plus there is a room option where you get a $20 visa gift card.

A bit over your max is the Helmsley Carlton House, which is $243.75 for a junior suite on Expedia. 10JUL takes $10 off = $233.75 per night. This would be the closer of the two to where you want to be.

Please use the site's Expedia.com link if either of these ideas are of interest.

At issue is that there just aren't a lot of hotels in this area.

If you go to Maps and Hotels.com and enter the address "74th st and central park, nyc" (wihtout the quotes) you will see just how few hotels there are in this area, compared to midtown and the midtown east area.

Wow. You're right. I had never used that website before but it is pretty helpful. I only saw about 10 or so places on the map that would be close enough to where the race starts/ends. And a lot of them are probably out of my price range ($250 max/per night). Out of all of these, do you suggest any that might be in my price range:

The Carlyle

The Mark

Hotel Plaza Athenee

The Lowell

Affinia Gardens

Loews Regency

Helmsley Carlton

Pierre New York

Plaza Hotel

Jumeirah Essex

Bridgestreet 316 E. 63rd.

Thank you, as always.

The other hotels listed would be more expensive (and in many cases WAY more expensive.)

NYC is very compact, and while i wouldn't stay downtown or anything extreme like that, the much of the midtown area is going to get you 'close enough'... i'd save the money on the hotel and take a $10 cab ride to the location in the morning and come out ahead of the game :)

HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the MTC zone for $179/nite with:

Restaurant, Fitness, Internet, Business and a Tripadvisor rating of 4.0/5.0 with 380+ reviews

While these amenities are common for a 4* hotel in NYC, i'm guessing that this is the Warwick (a second/back-up guess would be the Helmsley Park Lane) Regardless of which one it is (or even some other one, but i'm guessing the Warwick) the Tripadvisor user reviews are good, it's within your budget, and almost all places in this zone will be a $10 or under cab ride (to 74th and Park) and about a 5 minute ride away... so doesn't seem to make much sense ot spend $50+ more per nite to stay in the Upper East Side, especially when the race is only one aspect of this trip, the MTC zone will work out better for your sightseeing as well afterward.

I ended up booking through PRICELINE. Here are the results:

I wanted Central Park South and bid $150 per night for a two night stay: 9/5 to 9/7/09

But that was rejected so I ended up getting Le Parker Meridien for $198 per night.

I hope that helps!
