yoni_one Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 About an hour ago what appears to be the same hotel was showing as $119 -3.5* Midtown Central Boutique HotelSmokefree RoomsFitness CentreRestaurant(s)High Speed Internet AccessSpaI am going with my 74 year old mum who has slight mobility problems and I know very little about NYC and the areas within.Any suggestions on where would be the safest and most practical place to look to stay would be very welcome.Btw, I used the HOTWIRE link, I LOVE this site :) Thanks in advance.
thereuare Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Please follow-up your Hotwire Maui thread with whatever you ended up doing for that stay... then bump this thread and we'll comment regarding the above. Thanks for using our PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links. yoni_one Posted June 29, 2009 Author Report Posted June 29, 2009 So sorry about that, I have now added a follow up to the Maui thread, thanks.I'm also struggling to ID a 4* midtown east $149 for the same dates -FitnessRestaurantBusiness CentreHigh Speed Internet AccessShould I start a separate thread for this one? Thanks
thereuare Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 In regards to the 4* MTE property, the 4* Omni Berkshire Hotel has previously been reported with this amenity icon, and sometimes the W New York 'hides' a Spa icon, also making it the same as the above, so either of these would be our best guess. The 3.5* property has not yet been reported to the board, but it's been speculated that it might be the Dream hotel. What is the purpose of this NYC trip and what do you intend to see/do during this stay? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
yoni_one Posted June 29, 2009 Author Report Posted June 29, 2009 Thanks for the info, I think the Omni would be great but not sure about the W New York or the guess at the Dream Hotel, need to look those up.What is the purpose of this NYC trip and what do you intend to see/do during this stay? The purpose of the trip is pure sightseeing, my mum is a late starter and now wants to see as many places as she can while she is still able to travel without difficulty. We haven't organised exactly which attractions we are going to prioritise on this trip but I don't want to be too far out of where the main tourist attractions are incase she suddenly gets tired and needs to get back to the hotel to rest. For lack of knowing much about what the area has to offer I guess we are thinking a show, a boat trip around the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square and shopping. So, any suggestions, particularly about where would be most safe, from those in the know would be more than welcome.Cheers
thereuare Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Nothing is "jumping off the page" at the moment as a 'best buy'... what is your maximum budget per nite for this stay? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
yoni_one Posted June 29, 2009 Author Report Posted June 29, 2009 Before I started looking my maximum budget was $100 per night but now I can see I was perhaps somewhat unrealistic with that.I don't really have a set maximum budget but I would rather not go above $150 unless something incredible came up.What I really wanted was a fairly low budget hotel (at a budget price) like a Holiday Inn, in a safe and convenient location, but not knowing the locations is really hampering me. Also, having read some terrible reviews on TA on what on paper appears to be a good hotel or location, I'm getting very confused.
AaronJB Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 I wouldn't read too much into the reviews on tripadvisor. Keep in mind that many of those reviewers paid full price; while a hotel may not exceed one's expectations at full price (which is often quite expensive in NYC!), those who are able to get the same room for half may feel differently. In terms of a very well-reviewed 3*, the Beekman Tower is $122.50 on Expedia, plus 10JUN coupon code takes another $10 off each night = $112.50. That property also has kitchenettes in the rooms, as well, which may be a benefit. My only concern is that this property is a little bit out of the way in MTE. Otherwise, it gets great reviews and you would have a studio suite. Please use the site's Expedia.com link if this idea is of interest.
thereuare Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 I'll throw it out there since it's a very good hotel with a great location, but the Westin Times Square appears to be available on HOTWIRE for your dates at $169/nite if you were willing to stretch your budget. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
yoni_one Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 Thank you so much for your suggestions, I checked out Beekman Tower, it looks a great deal but having looked at the maps I'd like to try and hold out for something more central if possible.Unfortunately I can't find the Westin at $169, is that the one now showing at $191 per night? If so DANG the time difference! Do you think it is possible the rate will come down again?
AaronJB Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 I'm still seeing a 4* in the TS/Theatre District area for $169 when searching for 2 adults on these dates. Please use the site's HOTWIRE link if this is of interest. However, I think your mom may like the grand, historic Intercontinental Barclay more, which is $159 via Orbitz.com for these dates non-refundable, plus an extra 10% off using the deal0hotel coupon code = $143.10 per night. Please use the site's Orbitz.com link if this idea is of interest.
AaronJB Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 There's also a 3.5* in MTE for $129 w/Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Tennis (likely the Millennium UN), but again - while a very nice hotel, not a particularly central location.
yoni_one Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 Once again thank you very much for all your time trying to assist me but for some reason I am just not seeing what you are seeing. The only Times Sq 4* is still showing up as $191 for me on Hotwire and the Intercontinental Barclay (which sounds a perfect hotel) is coming up as $209 (less 10% with code) on Orbitz.Nevertheless this communication has helped me to focus more on sticking to within or closely around Times Square and also not to pay too much attention to the more negative comments on TA.I've already invested so much time this is now a bit of a mission and if not careful I will end up doing your heads in as much as I am doing my own in!I'll soldier on and update once I have made a booking.Cheers again for your help.
yoni_one Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 Just two of us, me and my mum. Another thing that has come to light that I hadn't realised about re hotels in New York is that room size is usually really small and most seem to have just one bed.It wouldn't be the end of the world having to bunk in with my mum but she might think otherwise given that I tend to thrash about in my sleep. That said, I'd still chance it for a good deal on Hotwire. :)
AaronJB Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Odd, as I'm searching for 2 as well (I thought you may be seeing different things due to searching for more than 2 people.)

yoni_one Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 I'm not very pooter savvy and this may be the dumbest suggestion ever, but if you copy and paste this link to your browser it just might show you what I am seeing?http://www.hotwire.com/hotel/results.jsp?searchTokenId=2In for a penny, in for a pound, another suggestion mostly likely up there with the dumb ones, the fact I am searching from the UK shouldn't make any difference should it???? :)

It's 159 a night and you can get a king or 2 double beds. Also, there are coffee makers in the room! It's very centrally located-I think you'd be very happy there. Have fun.

Also, there are coffee makers in the room! It's very centrally located-I think you'd be very happy there. Have fun.Oh man, this is getting really freaky. I used the link to Orbitz again and found the hotel, for me it is showing at $209, when I use the coupon it takes that down to $197. The double double rooms are showing at $217 including the discount.Unfortunately I can't justify going that far beyond my original spending plan.I can't understand why I am getting completely different rates tho.
AaronJB Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Unfortunately, now I'm also seeing the Intercontinental on Orbitz for that rate and the HOTWIRE rate for $191. Odd that I was seeing the lower rates earlier today. I'm still looking for other ideas.
yoni_one Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 I tried to copy and paste the summary of what I am seeing on the list that includes 4* Times Squ Theatre District and when I pasted it brought this lot up below, but as you can see it states $191 and was the only 4* for that area given. If you highlight immediately above the price box it shows a reference number, is your reference number for the $169 4* the same as the one quoted below? Also I have added the amenities in bold because they didn't copy across. yoni_one Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 Phew, I thought I was going bonkers for a while there. Thanks
AaronJB Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 HOTWIRE has a 4* in the ESB area with smoke-free, boutique, fitness, business for $162, which would likely be the well-reviewed Roger Williams. There's also a 4* in MTE for $164 with fitness, business, restaurant and internet, which would likely be either the W New York or Omni; I don't think the W would appeal to your mom, though. One more suggestion, which would be semi-complicated.Click this link to the Wyndham website. Search for your dates in NYC. A list of hotels should come up, and one of the hotels in the Wyndham Garden Times Square South. Do not click on the "rates/reservations" button. Instead, click on the "hotel information" button, which should take you to the hotel front page. There should be a link that says "Enter Corporate, Promotional or Group Code". Click that and enter DISZOO6. Then search for your dates. There should be a room w/1 bed for $129 the first night, then $149 the other 4 nights. It should also say, "Rate includes daily continental breakfast for two people only regardless of room occupancy and welcome cocktails for 2 (one time only) per stay."There's also a room w/2 beds for $159 the first night, $179 the other nights.
