Priceline Hotel: san diego 4 * bidding

We have just booked to go to San Diego Jul 16-21. We would like to stay around Mission Bay or La Jolla areas. But priceline just gives us a broad area of San Diego Coastal. We have tried to bid for a 4 * hotel in the San Diego Coastal, 1st bid $85, turned down, then 2nd bid $88, turned down again. Yet we are seeing others getting 4* Grand Hyatt at $70 (but in the Downtown area). Is there any tips about bidding for Mission Bay or La Jolla area? When is the best time window to bid? Would waiting until a few days before DTA give us a better chance because the hotels are loading off unsold rooms? Do all 4* hotels charge for parking in San Diego? I guess that's unavoidable.

You're not bidding the Downtown zone so what others are winning there should have no barring on your Coastal bid... other than knowing what the alternative is if your Coastal bidding gets too high and staying in a cheaper area might seem like a good trade-off. The La Jolla area is more expensive than the Downtown area.

There is no way to target a specific area of the zone when using PRICELINE, you need to be willing to accept a hotel anywhere within the shaded boundaries of the zone. If location is more important than price have you looked at HOTWIRE, which draws its boundaries differently than PRICELINE, and there has its own "La Jolla" zone (and includes Mission Bay in with "SeaWorld - Mission Bay - Shelter Island" if that area would work fro you as well)
