I will be on my honeymoon in August in Maui, then Kauai, and would like some help with bidding on a rental car. This post will be about Maui, and I will create another post for Kauai.

DATES: Arriving August 2nd, at around 3:30pm. Leaving Maui on August 8th at about 1pm. Airport code: OGG

I have a cancel-able reservation for a full size car at $37 per day, for a subtotal of $223, total estimate: $275.

I would like to get a convertible. The only reason I reserved the full size is that for some reason, the convertible rate wasn't cancel-able. The best rate I can find using this sites rental-checker for a convertible is $339 per week, total of $419 tax and all, either from Dollar or Thrifty.

What are your bidding suggestions?

Update:

About to go to bed, so I thought I'd do a little bidding just to see where I stood. I bid a pretty low $27 per day on a convertible, and it was rejected.

FYI - check the Enterprise car rental site. Yesterday I reserved a Full Size for $32 a day at Maui (OGG) for 8/9-8/12. Let us know if this rate is available for your dates...

I am interested in a convertible, so I checked the website- the Enterprise weekly rate was $360, total cost $440. So hotwire beats them by about $20. Thanks for the info, though. I'll have to wait another couple of days so I can bid again to see if I can beat that hotwire reservation.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry I was not referring to the convertible; the Enterprise full size is $5 per day lower than the cancellable you currently have, that was my point :)

Ah, OK. Sorry I didn't post it, but when my maui bid was rejected, I went ahead and booked the hotwire convertible rate, since I can cancel it, and canceled the full size. I would have done this initially, but for some reason, when I booked the full size back in may, the convertible rate didn't give me the option of canceling, so I just went with one that did in case the rates went crazy later. But now, apparently, you CAN cancel it.. So my goal now is to beat the hotwire convertible rate of $339 ($56 a day- plus tax/fees.) I really want a convertible for some of the scenic driving opportunities on Maui, so I'm WILLING to pay this rate if I HAVE to. (But I'd rather pay less!!) :)

Sorry for not clarifying..

My 72 hours in the priceline low-bid penalty box should be up tonight. I'm trying to beat $56 per day. I bid a somewhat ridiculous $27 and it was rejected. Any suggestions? Should I concentrate on a percentage of the lowest published rate? The little red box that tried to get me to up my bid told me that $36 a day was a "good chance." I know you can get it lower, but should I use that "good chance" rate to determine my bid, or does it mean anything at all?

Good question. I just won a convertible at Kauai (LIH) for $35 8/12-8/17. I saw that another poster won at this price so I decided to go for it and it was accepted, I decided to do that rather than waiting till closer and hoping for lower rates. However I've not had the same luck with Maui (OGG), it seems car rates are higher there. I only need 3 days in Maui and I have a $32 cancellable reservation, so I'm going to keep bidding and wait for lower rates.

I was the other poster- glad my info helped you! We are doing 6 days in Maui, 6 days in Kauai. I just need to get the Maui rental handled. You say you haven't had the same luck in Maui, can you let us know what you got rejected on- might help me formulate my next bid!

Update-

I just won a convertible from Alamo (yes, I used the pirce.line link from this site) in Maui (OGG) for $44 a day. 8/2-8/8. Lowest published price was $56 a day. It didn't come back and ask me to raise my bid like it usually does, so maybe that means I bid a little too high? Anyway, it saved me $85 off my cancellable reservation.

I'll try to edit my original post so the title reflects the win..

EDIT: OK, apparently I can't edit a post if it's not the same day. I don't know how else to do it- unless the admin has to.
