Priceline Hotel: NJ Path to midtown Manhattan from Exchange Place

If I get a hotel near Exchange Place station, looks like PATH gives direct route to World Trade Center area, then its subways to get north. Or a more convoluted PATH ride to get up to 33rd st. area.

Which would you say is faster? Less complicated for the newbie?

Also, is there a way to get to Ellis Island from the NJ side, or is it only accessible via Ferry from NYC?
