Priceline Hotel: Assistance with bidding in the Fall

Hi all, I am new to the PRICELINE game, and am looking to book some hotels for a trip to NY in October.

I will be coming and going from NY in two night bursts, and the first one I want to book is 17-19 October.

I'm looking at 4* in Soho, MTW and CPS as there are some quality hotels there.

As this is peak season, I was just wondering tactically what a good starting bid would be? Also, am I better of waiting until closer to the date, or is it really just a gamble?

Also, some of the best hotels (ie. the London, the Royalton) never seem to come up in people's wins - how can you maximise your chances of achieving these, instead of just paying more for a lesser quality hotel?
