I didn't book yesterday and I did the search again today, the results being one 4, one 3.5 and one 3 star for Downtown Houston.

The new price for the 4* is $94 instead of yesterday's price. It has exactly the same amenities so chances are is the same hotel. Anyway, if I include 2 adults / 2 childs the results vary in price, again three results with one 4, one 3.5 and one 3 star, but the 4* is now $79 exact same amenities (remember yesterday was at $82 for one person).

Though it is strange, probably the hotel does this to attract larger parties knowing they might end up with additional expenses.

My questions: is this normal? can I just book as 2/2 to have a better pricing, and just go alone?

HOTWIRE uses a variable mark-up in their pricing. When you change the occupancy it's treated as a 'new' search, so the price can change slightly (either or or down)... so it's not that the hotel is trying to attract larger parties, it's more likely that this search is using a slightly lower mark-up than the previous search, and that accounts for the $3 price difference.

There is no problem searching for quad occupancy and showing up as a solo traveler.
