As stated before, the 11th seemed to be an expensive night, so I broke my stay into two parts. I bid from $100 ti $110 in increments of $2 using MTE, MTW, TS, CPS and eventually had this offer accepted (I separately had bid much more on all areas except MTW to avoid this hotel, but none of my offers had been accepted, even bidding $145+ for TS, CPS 4* and $135+ for MTE 4*). I heavily considered waiting longer and hoping to snag a room as the date approached, but I decided against it, because a nicer room would only make me marginally happier, while the peace of mind, and lower price were more important.

I don't plan to be in my room much, and the price is right, and the location is more than right, even if the rooms aren't quite as nice as other 4 stars in the area.

I have heard about people slipping the receptionist a $20-50 dollar bill and recieving a significantly nicer room. Has anyone had luck doing this at this hotel? Is it possible that they take the tip and I end up with nothing better?

Congratulations on your success!

You could give the front desk person $20, but I tend to recommend just being polite and asking. The whole "$20 trick" thing seems more of a Vegas thing.

At some hotels, the hotel will allow you to upgrade for a fee (often the difference between a regular room and the upgrade.) Having a Starwood Preferred Guest membership (free at spg.com) will very likely not help - and you will likely not get rewards credit for the stay - but it doesn't hurt to have the membership.

Have a great trip.

I had a great stay. I was given a room on the 46th floor with a view of the swarovski crystal ball. The room was big with a 42 inch plasma and a spacious desk. The bed was nice but the furniture and bathroom were by no means luxury or up to the normal standards of a 4 star hotel. The room was not very well cleaned (little pieces of paper and half a m&m on the floor --- but it didn't detract much from my experience). The room smelled a little bit like mildew and the lock box was not reset when we checked in. They missed out on all of the details you should expect from a 4 star. But the room was huge, nice bed, nice tv, big desk, decent bathroom and a good view and hotel location. Thrilled at $110, would not have been thrilled at $200+.
