When is the best time for me to call Hyatt to advise them of my room requirements (2 beds/no-smoking)? Soon or closer to our arrival?

You think slipping the front desk a tip would get me an upgrade? :)

I'd call them now for your bedding request and then again 2-3 days before your stay to make sure it's noted in the system (asusming they're willing to enter such a request now)

By tipping what type of upgrade would you be looking for?

I am thinking that by tipping, I could get a better room/better view perhaps since we will be there for 5 nights.

Yes, the hotel has your reservation almost instantly after a bid is won.

By tipping i think you should be able to, no problem, get a high floor and whatever type of view you'd like... whether you can get an ugprade to the excecutive level or a 'business plan' room i'm not really sure. (so if that's what you want i'd ask somehting liek: "i would really like something on a high floor (with a view of the cruise ships) so anything you do to help with that would be greatly apprecaited. I figure you know the layout of the rooms, and which ones are better than others, much better than i ever could, as well as if any complimentary upgrades are avaialble, so i'll leave it in your judgement to pick me out the nicest room you can on a high floor")... of course you should paraphrase this and it should be converstational, not rehearsed :)
