squidd78 Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 I'm planning a trip to Chicago with my son on Fri.6/12 departing Mon. 6/15. I'm looking for a nice deal. I would prefer something downtown with a pool for my son. Looking for 4 star if possible. I'm willing to pay a fair price but obviously don't want to overpay. Can you help me? Hotwire has a listing for those dates. "Loop 4 star" fitness icon, swimming icon, restaurant icon, business center icon, hispeed internet icon. Price is $89/ night. Any idea as to what hotel this may be? Any suggestions? Son is 14. Loop or River North?I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks
AaronJB Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Welcome to the site. The hotel in question is likely the Palmer House Hilton, which would appear to be the best deal on busy dates. Generally I prefer the Michigan Ave. area, but with this listing being considerably less than the other 4* downtown options on these dates (which seem busy, given the high-ish hotel prices), I think it's worth considering. It is a nice hotel in the middle of the Loop - the only issue is that that area does get quiet at night. The Loop is an easier walk (although it's still a longish walk, some of which is along the lake) to the Museum Campus than from the Michigan Ave. area. The Palmer is also near a few different CTA stations. There is a 3.5* Mag Mile/Streeterville with Suite, Free Breakfast and several other amenities (likely the Embassy Suites) for $139, but I'd rather recommend staying at the Palmer and saving $50 bucks per night. Please use the site's HOTWIRE link to start your purchase.
squidd78 Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 Thanks for the reply. Being that I'm with my son, I know a pool is a big plus. Would you recommend trying PRICELINE or waiting to see if this rate comes down some? Is there any way of decoding if a Pricelinr property has a pool before I would bid? Is $139 for the Embassy Suited a decent price compared to what you have seen? Thanks again for your input. I want this to be a nice weekend for my Father- Son outing.
thereuare Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 There is no way to tell if the hotel you're going to win on PRICELINE has a pool or not... its the 'luck of the draw' as to which 4* hotel in the zone you receive.Nobody can say if rates will go down, or up, between now and your stay (see the related link in our PRICELINE FAQ for a further discussion on 'when is the best time to bid'). I haven't looked at the rates for the other offerings, but it's mentioned above that they're somewhat higher than usual, indicating somewhat higher demand. Hotel direct rates at the Hilton website for these dates show rates starting at $200+, so the $89/nite HOTWIRE rate would seem to be a pretty good deal. If you do continue to wait, rates could go down, but they could also go up, and the 'new' hotel offered may not have a pool. The one gripe that does seem prevelent about this hotel is that 'extras' are all extra... intenet, fitness center, etc are all additional; not a big deal if you don't intend to use internet or the fitness center, but something to consider if you do intend to use these items. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help. You're right , the price could go up or down Who cares? I figured I"ve saved money on the breakfast alone.Good Work! The location seems great. We are going to Wrigley for the Cubs-Twins series. Thanks Again.

thereuare Posted May 14, 2009 Report Posted May 14, 2009 Thanks for the follow-up... but can you please add just the amenities that are shown when going to the MY ACCOUNT link using the link on the top right hand corner of HOTWIRE's home page. We're not so much interested in the amenities that the hotel offers, but more so in the amenities that HOTWIRE associates with this property (ie- there is no "manager's reception" icon so that wouldn't be listed in the amenities in your account profile. Thanks again.
