JSiegelman Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 I want to spend 2 nights in NYC during the week of 10/17-10/22, and suggestions as to which nights would be more easily obtained and how to bid for an upscale hotel on a budget of around $150 a night. Would like to stay in Midtown, but last time in NYC stayed at the Millenium Hilton which was a breeze to get around by subway, however very pricy!
thereuare Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 Based upon current rates i don't think you'll be successful in Midtown for a 4* hotel at $150. I'd certainly try lower figures first and work up to $150, but i think it will currently take a bid of $160-$185 to be successful. We'll be more than happy to provide a strategy up to $150, but if not successful at that figure, would you prefer to wait it out, lower to 3*, or raise your bid amount.Let us know and we'll advise accordingly. JSiegelman Posted August 29, 2004 Author Report Posted August 29, 2004 If 3 stars are generally inhabitable I have no problem trying one of those. It seems that in NYC they are not very popular Where in other places I have had great experiences with a 3 star. I also forgot to mention we do need a place that provides a parking option as we will be driving.
thereuare Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 I think there are far fewer 3* wins for NYC than 4* wins because the prices for each are very similar. In some zones you have 3* properties going for 50%-75% of the rates for 4* properties which (IMO) makes the 3* a better value than the 4*... but in NYC is seems the 3* properties are only about 10%-20% cheaper than 4*.I assume that you state you require a parking option you mean that parking will be available... you do understand that there will be a charge for it and it will be substantial. Expect parking to cost somewhere between $25-$40/day.Most hotels do offer some sort of parking option, but if not, there will almost certainly be a garage within a block (or two at the most) that you can leave your car (most hotels don't actually own the garages where they park guests' cars... they lease the space from public garages). In fact, i often recommend choosing a nearby garage rather than the hotel's garage as it will almost always be less expensive. Here is a link regarding PARKING IN New York City that also contains a link that can find a list of garages near any location and prices for that garage. So if parking at a nearby garage is acceptable to you (should it come to that) it sounds as if you'd like to keep your budget at $150 and try for a 3* hotel (we'll try for a 4* first, but then proceed to 3* options)... is that correct? If so let us know and we'll provide a strategy. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
JSiegelman Posted August 30, 2004 Author Report Posted August 30, 2004 yes, i am well aware of the cost of parking. I have never tried a garage in the city, but that site is very helpful...thanks.I guess i am ready to proceed with a strategy for the $150 room, I will go a little higher if necessary but want to stay well under $200. I am also very flexible with dates any 2 days together From sunday thru thursday will do.
thereuare Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 What is your maximum bid? We can supply a strategy to whatever figure you dictate. I said above i believe a 4* will likely take $160-$185 (we'll start lower), but i'm not sure where that falls relative to 'i'm wiling to go a little higher' since that means different things to different people. If you're not successful with a 4* at your maximum bid then we'll move onward and try for a 3*... no pressure. :) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
thereuare Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 OK, find a block of time and sit down in a comfortable chair :) When bidding 4* you have two re-bid zones, when bidding 3* you have one re-bid zone. char540 Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Hotwire right now has a 4* 10/17-10/19 for $171 in Midtown (Sheraton?)4* 10/18-10/20 for $171 in Midtown (Sheraton?)4* 10/19 -10/21 for $1794* 10/20-10/22 for $176
thereuare Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Char540, the 4* on the above searches contain a Boutique icon which is not known to be associated with the Sheraton. The description for the hotel above is indeed in the HOTWIRE HOTEL LIST NEW YORK and is a hotel whose standard rooms are only known to have one bed... and can't fit a roll-away either. This hotel is rated 3* on Priceline and is why i made the comment above that JSiegelman should contact me before bidding 3* if one bed would be a problem. char540 Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Sorry about the guess of the Sheraton. Just trying to be helpful.
char540 Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Also thanks for the tip about the conference - my dates are 9/16-9/20 and have not any luck on priceline up to $140
thereuare Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Sorry about the guess of the Sheraton. Just trying to be helpful. No harm done :) PS- hope you didn't read any negativity in my post as none was intendedlew,Is that convention you mentioned in September or October? (you typed September but this bid is for October... unless i'm missing something discussed further up in the thread) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
JSiegelman Posted September 21, 2004 Author Report Posted September 21, 2004 After multiple rejections up to $185, I was finally able to get the 4* marriott marquis for 150 ( my goal!) for 10/17 and 18. Thanks to thereuare who helped demystify the bidding process!
thereuare Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Congratulations on your win! Glad to hear of your ultimate success... you certainly worked and put the time in for this one!Obviously rates had changed in your favor since you started bidding and serves as a good example to others how rates can (and do) change.Enjoy your stay in the city.
